Jack Sloop Obituary

Jack Corriher Sloop KANNAPOLIS Jack Corriher Sloop, 87, of Mooresville, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at the V.A. Medical Center Hospice House. Jack was the fifth of nine children born to Vastine and Katie Sloop on their farm on Highway 152, between Landis and Mooresville. Jack went to Concordia one-room school until the 6th grade, then to the consolidated Landis School, where he graduated in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946 and worked as a radar man on the destroyer Paul Hamilton, participating in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Jack married Margaret Biles in 1947. They had three daughters, Lori, Amy and Marsha. He worked in the Order and Data Entry Department at Cannon Mills from 1964 until 1989. Through the years Jack was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school, serving on the church council and singing bass in the choir. After retirement he enjoyed line dancing with friends at the YMCA, helped plan several reunions with high school classmates and also enjoyed fellowship with the Lunch Bunch at Concordia. Jack Sloop is survived by two daughters, Lori Barbee (Dale) of Concord and Amy Stinson (Steve) of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Katie, Sam and Emma; and five siblings, Philip, Jake, Mary Helen Wilkinson, Kathryn Campbell and Doris Cavin. Jack's youngest daughter, Marsha Murphy, was taken by kidney disease in 2009, and his wife, Margaret, died of leukemia in 1976. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Concordia Lutheran Church, China Grove, officiated by Rev. Kenneth W. Reed, Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Good Shepherd Fund of Concordia Lutheran Church, 185 Concordia Church Rd., China Grove, NC 28023 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
