Bernard May Obituary

Bernard E. May, Sr.

95, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on April 10, 2017. Bernie was a pro golfer, and taught golf for many years. He had 13 holes-in-one to his credit, his last at the age of 89. He proudly served our country in WWII, from North Africa and Anzio Beach, to the Battle of the Bulge. He was an avid artist, having attended the Herron School of Art. Bernie never turned-down a request for a custom-made poster, and took great pride and pleasure in his creations. Bernie was a member of Tab Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. He never met a stranger and welcomed everyone into his home as a friend. He loved to make people laugh. He had many, many talents, but much humility. He was known for his sense of humor and giving spirit to all who knew him.

Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Mary Ellen May; children, Bernie May, Jr., Janie Parr, and Thomas May (Maureen); 4 grandchildren, Steve May, Britney May-Kanan (Steph), Eric Parr, and Nicholas Parr (Allie); 5 great-grandchildren, Quentin May, Danica Carlson, Zach Carlson, Mya May, and Perry Kanan; sisters, Nina Gibson and Elizabeth Dunlap; with over 40 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles C. and May May; grandson, Jeffrey C. May; siblings, Margaret, Hazel, Isabelle, Pauline, William, Leonard, Clifford, Robert, and John Douglas.

The family would like to thank the VA and Season's Hospice teams and also the Tab Church family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Tab Presbyterian Church Recreational Program.

Calling will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. with memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, 418 E 34th St, Indianapolis. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North.

Janie, I regret I saw this just today after the fact. I am not a regular FB reader any longer after closing my showroom. What a remarkable man, you must have wonderful memories with a father such at he was. I regret I was not able to attend but please accept my condolences on your loss. I know it must have left an enormous void in your large family.
May you feel the presence and comfort of our Lord during your loss. Denise and Gary Friermood

My condolences to his family. As a salesman traveling around Indy I used to stop by his garage whenever I saw the doors open. I always enjoyed his stories, his energy and sense of humor. A very nice man who I believe never met a stranger.

We lived next door to the Mays on 34th street when we were growing up. What a wonderful family! They were my first babysitting job and I was only 11 yrs. old. I remember how talented Bernie was in everything he attempted. He would go to the Indiana State Fair and come back with lots of stuffed animals and toys. I think they told him not to come back anymore. My Mary Ellen and the children find grace and peace knowing Bernie is with the Lord.

We lived next door to the Mays when we were growing up on 34th street. What a wonderful family. The kids were my first babysitting family and I was only 11 at the time! I remember how gifted Bernie was at the Indiana State Fair- He used to win lots of stuffed animals and prizes. I think they told him not to come back anymore!. May God grant Mary Ellen and the children grace and peace knowing he is with the Lord.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Bernie a few decades ago. Referred to me by a fellow player, I visited his shop, looking for a new driver. After chatting at some length, he asked what I hoped to accomplish with a new driver. I explained that I'd been fighting a fade (okay, a slice) and his response was, "I can fix your slice in 10 minutes. If I do, will you buy the club?" Of course, I said, "Yes!" A quick trip to the driving range and, true to his word, a minor swing tweak made all the difference. From a bad slice to a sweet baby draw in about 9 balls. That brief encounter resulted in several return trips, where the stories were nearly as good as the gear and repairs. What a unique, wonderful, warm and charming man. My condolences to everyone in his family and to all his friends.
