Frank Countryman Obituary
Frank W. Countryman, M.D. 85, son of the Ernest and Louise King Whitney Countryman, died peacefully on February 14th with his wife and members of his family at his bedside. He was born in St. Paul, MN, graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, the Yale School of Medicine and the Menninger Foundation School of Psychiatry. Frank was a former superintendent of Kentucky State Hospital and on the staff of Winter Veterans Hospital and the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS. Dr. Countryman was a former assistant professor of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and served as a consultant to Social Security administration's Hearing and Appeals Committee, Circle City Evaluation Center, the Medicaid program and Indiana Bell Telephone Company. He served on the Governor's Council on Mental Health and upon retirement, was a member of Volunteers in Medicine. He was also a Board Member of both Catholic and Jewish Social Services and Boy Scout Troop 174. He sang in the choirs of Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Pius X Churches and was a long time psychiatric consultant to the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Dr. Countryman was a veteran of World Wall II, a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the Marion County Medical Association, Indiana Psychiatric Society, the Central Neuropsychiatric Association of which he had been president, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and the Professional Advisory Board of La Leche League International. An avid golfer, he was a member of Highland Golf & Country Club and past secretary of the Yale Club of Indiana. Dr. Countryman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Ann (Kosters) Countryman and his six children, Marianne C. Burkhart, Lt. Col. Frank W. and his wife Libby, Countryman, Jr. (ret), Stuart B, Dr. Philip A. and his wife Sandi, Christopher K. and his wife Karen, Countryman and Elisabeth C. and her husband Jan, Allen, along with fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday February 18th at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5692 N. Central Ave., of which he was a member. Family and friends will gather on Friday February 17th from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Leppert Mortuary Nora Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or La Leche League International, 1400 N.
