Gordon Brown Obituary

Dr. Gordon Taylor Brown Prominent Indianapolis psychiatrist, Gordon Taylor Brown, passed away February 1, 2007. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 25, 1924 to Roy L. and Mary Ellen Taylor Brown. Dr. Brown was a 1949 graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, interned at the San Diego Naval Hospital and was in a rural general practice in Kentucky for a period of time prior to entering psychiatric residency training. His residency training included Logansport State Hospital and Norways Hospital in affiliation with Indiana University Medical Center. After completion of residency training, he remained at Norways Hospital in a staff position for one year before taking a position at the Marion County Child Guidance Clinic where he subsequently served as the Director. For four years he served on the part-time faculty of the I.U. School of Medicine in training and supervision of psychiatric residents and over the years served for varying periods of time as psychiatric consultant to the Veterans Administration Hospital, Child Guidance Clinic, Indiana Boys School, Indiana Girls School, Indiana Women's Prison, Indiana State Reformatory, Lutheran Child Welfare Association, Methodist Children's Home, and on various community and state boards and committees. For thirty years he was psychiatric consultant to the Marion County Juvenile Court and for nineteen years was psychiatric consultant to the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Benjamin Harrison, in both instances he was instrumental in initiating what became comprehensive and well-staffed facilities. For several years he was psychiatric consultant to the Disciples of Christ Division of Overseas Ministries and was one of the consultants in this area utilized by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Prudential and Chevrolet. Dr. Brown served as secretary, treasurer, newsletter editor and, subsequently, vice president and president of the Indiana Neuropsychiatric Association. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the Marion County Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Association and Indiana Psychiatric Society. Over the years he had served on the staff of Methodist Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital, Community Hospital, Winona Memorial Hospital, Johnson County Memorial Hospital and St. Francis Hospital, two of which he served as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and as a member of various executive, credential, medical policy, utilization review and quality assurance committees. After many years of these activities, with the primary thrust of his work in the private practice of psychiatry, he accepted a position to return part-time as Medical Director of the Marion County Child Guidance Clinic, which was in the process of developing into a comprehensive mental health center. In 1980, Dr. Brown closed his practice and assumed the position of full-time Medical Director of the Adult and Child Mental Health Clinic. Dr. Brown retired from practice in December of 2005. Dr. Brown was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Juanita Brown; his four daughters, Susi Megathlin, Mary Keith, Linda Brown and Judy Gates; his five grandchildren, Erin Mcginnis, John Megathlin, Dana Bumbalough, Paul Podlejski and Mackenzie Gates; and his two great-granddaughters, Riley Bess Mcginnis and Hannah Bumbalough.
