Jerome Greene Obituary

Jerome Patrick Greene ("Jerry") October 27, 1941 - April 27, 2017

After a courageous battle with cancer, Jerome P. Greene ("Jerry") passed away peacefully with his beloved wife by his side. Jerry will be remembered for his clever wit, compassionate heart, uplifting spirit and kindness. All who knew him will miss his fun-loving personality, brilliant mind and zest for life.

Jerry is survived by his wife, best friend and soulmate of nearly 24 years, Susanne McAlister. A devoted father and grandfather, Jerry is also survived by his two loving children, Dawn Greene (Manchester, MA) and Jerome Greene Jr. (Indianapolis, IN) as well as two adoring grandchildren, Alexander and Dutch.

Upon graduating from Boston College Mr. Greene honorably served in the United States Navy as a Communications Officer. He was stationed in Naples, Italy during the Vietnam War. Jerry was truly an officer and a gentleman.

Jerry Greene received an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and began his career as an alternative investments analyst at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company in Hartford, CT.  Then Wall Street came calling. Greene established Wall Street's first formal effort in the institutional partnership arena - Private Placements - raising alternative investment funds for leveraged buyout operators. For seven years, he headed Salomon Brothers' prestigious Private Placement Group. Then, with his charismatic leadership style, Jerry became a Managing Director of Merrill Lynch for ten years where he was responsible for the firm's Private Placement activities.

With his entrepreneurial savvy, Jerry became a co-founder of the boutique investment banking firm Benedetto, Gartland & Greene in 1990. He then established his own firm, J.P. Greene & Associates. The firm, which began in 1997 and continued until his retirement in 2010, amassed worldwide clients. Throughout his career, Jerry provided invaluable guidance and inspiration to those he met. And amid all his great accomplishments, notable awards and vast recognition, Jerry maintained his humble nature.

A talented photographer, long-distance runner and avid sailor, Jerry and Susanne enjoyed their extensive travels touring 30 countries together. Many community organizations have benefitted from their generosity including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, LeSEA Global Feed the Hungry, Cordele Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, WFYI Public Broadcasting and Ballet Internationale upon whose board he served.

Jerry also loved being with family and friends and spent many of his early years at his summer home in Martha's Vineyard. Jerry truly lived life to its fullest and inspired others to reach their full potential.

Raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, Jerry is one of six children of Joseph and Rita Greene. His parents - formerly of Cape Cod Massachusetts - and brother, Paul Greene, preceded him in death. Surviving siblings are Joseph Greene, Robert Greene, Elinor Johnson and Mary Greene.

A private funeral service will be held at St. Pius X. To honor the life of Jerome Patrick Greene, a Celebration of Life will take place at the Gothic Chapel in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana at a later time. A Christian burial with Veterans honors have been entrusted to Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery.

Dear Suzzane,

I knew Jerry at Salomon Brothers after 1975. I was that firm's petroleum analyst. He was a friendly, and polished professional and we touched base a few times thereafter. My deepest sympathy for your loss and for the rest of the family.
