Dr. Joseph Butterworth

Dr. Joseph Charles Butterworth M.D. Of Indianapolis, passed away on May 29, 2009. He was born on August 26, 1936 in Clinton, IN to Robert M. and Louise (Bloomer) Butterworth. Joe was delivered by his grandfather Dr. Joseph R. Bloomer. Joe was a graduate of John Strange School, Broad Ripple High School and Indiana University. Dr. Butterworth served in the United States Air Force after graduating from Indiana School of Business. He also earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. Joe started his medical career as an intern at Wishard Hospital, completing his residency in Urology at Methodist Hospital before practicing full time at Winona Memorial Hospital. He then helped form Associated Urologists, Inc., which later merged with Urology of Indiana practicing at St. Vincent and St. Vincent Carmel, Witham Hospital and Methodist Hospital. Dr. Butterworth's life was dedicated to the practice of medicine and the care of his patients who he loved dearly. Joe was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Hoosier Hundred, Marion County Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, and board certified with American Urological Association. Joe was an avid supporter of Indiana University and a true Hoosier. Joe loved the city of Indianapolis and its culture and events. He was athletic and enjoyed physical fitness. Joe is survived by wife, Joyce Butterworth; daughter, Melissa Butterworth (Pat) Roberts; daughter, Susie (Jeff) Ehman; son, Jonas Butterworth; daughter Audra (Mike) Poe; sister, Martha Butterworth Kahn. "Papa Doc" is survived by grandchildren, Kylie, Kassandra, Austin; nephews; Thomas, Dr. Mark, and Steve Kahn and their families. Friends and family will gather on Thursday, June 4 from 1 to 7 p.m. in the McFarland Hall at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N.
