Lorraine Langell Obituary

Lorraine Elizabeth Secreste Langell Born June 24, 1923 in Berwyn, IL, and passed away Nov. 1, 2009 in Indianapolis. Lorraine enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves in Chicago in 1943 and served until her discharge in 1946, with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. She was assigned as an instructor at Ships Company, Hunter College, New York City. She served in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps from 1987 until Oct. 2000. Her rank at retirement was Lieutenant Commander. Her accomplishments included service as escort officer in submarine school, instructor at NSCC Leadership School, escort officer RTC Great Lakes, and escort officer USS Holland. Lorraine had over 50 years service to the American Red Cross, Indianapolis Chapter, as one of their first staff instructors and as a volunteer in Disaster Recovery Services. Her disaster recovery work includes the Los Angeles earthquake and hurricane recovery in Homestead, Fl. Lorraine held a Master's degree from Butler University and taught elementary school in Beech Grove and Indianapolis school systems, and worked for the Indiana State Parks system overseeing their aquatic programs. She was a member of the Irvington Presbyterian Church. Lorraine and her husband Dan spent many summers, while their children were growing up, as camp counselors at various summer camps in the midwest. She was preceded in death by husband, Dan Langell, Jr.; and is survived by sons, David Langell, Nashville, IN, Kenneth (Sandy) Langell, Brownsburg, IN, and Gary (Tisha) Langell, Ellettsville, IN; grandchildren, Geoffrey, Laura, Taylor, and Connor Langell; and many extended family members. Funeral services will be 4pm Sun. Nov. 8 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with visitation there from 2 to 4pm.
