Paul Smith Obituary

Paul E. "Snuffy" Smith 77, Avon, IN, died on September 3, 2006. Born April 6, 1929, to Lowell and Ruth Smith in Lafayette, Indiana. He was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and attended Purdue University before beginning a plumbing career that would span nearly 60 years. He was the founder of Paul E. Smith Company, an organization whose familiar Snuffy Smith logo--drawn by longtime friend, Art Vermillion--has been seen from Wall Street to Main Street and has adorned everything from plumbing trucks to Boy Scout canoes since 1967. After passing his first Master Plumbers examination in 1952, Snuffy would go on to serve as a member of the Plumbing Licensing Board for Marion County and as a respected board member of both the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association as well as the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis. Ever active within his community and his church, Snuffy was a former police commissioner for the Town of Speedway and a member of the Town of Speedway Hall of Fame; he was also a faithful member of Speedway Christian Church where he was a former board member and Elder. Snuffy is survived by his loving wife, Dona, with whom he shared 58 years of love, friendship, and marriage; his brother, Dr. David Smith of Tucson, Arizona; his children, Tom (Becky) Smith, Denny (Jane) Smith, and Conni Sue (Mike) Dunn; grandchildren Scott Smith, Emily Plumb, Andrew Smith, Fr. Christopher Smith, and Peter Dunn; and great-grandchildren William and Nicholas Plumb, and Emilie and Lucie Smith. Calling for Snuffy will be at the Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Speedway, on High School Road on Wednesday, September 6, from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., and one hour preceding the funeral. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, at Speedway Christian Church in Speedway, with burial to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Speedway Christian Church. www.flannerbuchanan.com
