Virginia Stirsman Obituary

Virginia Ruth Stirsman

88, of Indianapolis, passed peacefully at home on August 19, 2013. Born Nov. 1, 1924 in Dixon, Kentucky to Virginia Ellen Cottingham and James Asher Jones, she is survived by one sibling; brother, Donald Jones of Dixon, Ky. Her late husband was Rev. Andrew F. Stirsman of Indianapolis. They had six children, Virginia Ann Stirsman, Beth (Denny) Steeb, David (Micki) Stirsman, Paul Stirsman, Mary (Brian) Magazine, Jane (David) Jones; seven grandchildren, Andrew and Lindsey Magazine, Kelly and Connor Steeb, Shayne and Clay Stirsman, and Elena Stirsman.

Virginia worked in Evansville in the 1940's for Shears Department Store, then was a homemaker for many years, later working outside the home for many years as first a church secretary, then worked for over 25 years as a Morning Hospitality Coordinator (Hostess) for the Bob Evans Restaurant at U.S. 31 and I-465 on the south side of Indianapolis, retiring in 2010 at 85 years old.

A loving mother and grandmother, Virginia's life surrounded her family and church life. She loved cooking, hosting family gatherings, music, poetry, decorating, word and puzzle games, family getaways, but was nearly always happiest when serving others. She lived a simple yet abundant life, rich with friends and family. With her quick and easy smile, she influenced many with her infectious joy, sweet disposition, and kind and gentle demeanor. She will be dearly missed.

My condolences go out to the Stirsman family. During the choir progressive dinners she would write the most amazing stories at the last stop she would ask us for an adjective. We would spend the rest of the evening laughing about how the story turned out. Those times with the Washington St. United Methodist Church choir will always hold a special place in my heart.
