Lost my best friend, and it feels like a part of me is missing.

Seven years ago, my grandmother moved in with my family. Although at the time it was a drastic change that put many challenges at my door, I feel so blessed to have had all that time with her.

My grandmom was one of the most fantastic women I´ve ever known. She was witty, caring, and pragmatic, with a great sense of humor and perseverance like I´ve never seen in anyone else. I honestly feel we were soul mates, cut from the same cloth. We were so close. I always felt I could unabashedly be myself around her. I also know I honestly wouldn´t be here today without her- she was my rock through the absolute tempest that was high school, always there to lend an ear or offer advice amidst some of my most difficult moments in an extremely dark period of my life.

We would sit for hours, talking together, watching everything from Psych to Hamilton to Game of Thrones, playing Monopoly and Aggravation, and doing everything in between. She was good humored through all of my hyperfixations, always open to whatever I wanted to talk to her about or show her (she even good naturedly sat through 10 seasons of Doctor Who bless).

She was also my #1 cheerleader, the person who would always see greatness in me even when I couldn´t. I think the #1 moment in my life so far was seeing the look on her face when I got accepted into college. The pride in her eyes, the bright smile she had - that is burned into my memory.

Although the pandemic has been truly awful, getting this year at home with her, where we could spend time together despite my academic obligations, was a gift. It comforts me to know I wasn´t three or four hours away and that I have so many amazing moments to look back on that I wouldn´t have gotten otherwise, even as her health majorly declined.

My grandmother accomplished so much in her life too - she was a trailblazer and a pioneer. She also stood up for others, leaving behind a legacy of true goodness and professionalism as a doctor. I know she touched a lot of people´s lives, and I feel lucky that I was able to get to know and learn from such a brilliant and open-hearted woman.

She has also gifted me with many stories of adventure, whimsy, and hilarity. I know she lived a wonderful life, a life where she constantly subverted and outlasted everyone´s expectations, and that thought comforts me even though I am aching right now.
