CARL VIOLA Obituary

VIOLA CARL SAMUEL The world lost a legend on February 27, 2025, as Carl Viola of Narberth, age 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. A man of boundless charm, quick wit, and a heart as big as his smile, Carl left an indelible mark on everyone who had the joy of knowing him. Born on November 30, 1948, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, Carl had a magnetic personality, zest for life and a gift for making people laugh. A true Renaissance man, Carl excelled in business, the arts, and athletics. After graduating from Temple Pharmacy School in 1971, he owned and operated two independent pharmacies in Camden, New Jersey, for 35 years, serving his community with dedication and care. Carl's intellect was undeniable-he was a proud member of Mensa and a fierce competitor. His passion for rowing led him to become a Masters World Champion and serve as President of the Undine Barge Club. He cherished the sport not just for its discipline and physicality, but for the lifelong brotherhood he built with his friends on the water. He proudly represented Team USA's first Dragonboat team in 1983 and 1985, later captaining the U.S. Dragonboat team in 2009. As a member of The Haverford School's Board of Trustees, he was committed to shaping future generations. Carl's talents seemed endless-whether playing the piano, lighting up the dance floor or sinking a perfect shot in golf, pool or ping pong. But beyond his many skills, it was his warmth, authenticity, and ability to light up a room that truly set him apart. The ultimate cheerleader, Carl was always front and center at his children's sporting events, encouraging them with his booming voice. At home, he filled the air with music, laughter, and his signature whistle. His love for his "beautiful bride" of 53 years, Monnie Viola, was legendary-never missing a chance to declare that she was "the love of his life." Above all, Carl was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Monnie Viola; his brother, Michael Viola, and sister-in-law, Marci Viola; his children, Michael Viola and his wife, Tracy Viola, Christopher Viola and his partner, Janna Burrows, and Margaux Viola and her husband, Oliver Kell; and his cherished grandchildren, Ashley Viola, Erin Viola, Jaxson Kell, and Brooks Kell. His family was his greatest joy. A private Funeral Service will be held for the family. A celebration of Carl's extraordinary life will be held on April 26, 2025 at 1:00 P.M., at the Undine Barge Club's Castle Ringstetten in Philadelphia, 4347 Kelly Dr., Philadelphia, PA 19129. In honor of Carl's decade-long battle with Alzheimer's, the family requests that donations be made to the Penn Memory Center (South Pavilion, 3400 Civic Center Blvd., 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19104) in lieu of flowers. Where do I begin. We came from Connecticut in 1975 with our two little girls. Eddy D'Alba introduced us to Carl and Monnie and they took us under their wing. What wonderful times we all had coming from everywhere to train for the Olympics. His super fun personality was so infectious as he tried to engage our terribly shy daughters. How I loved dancing with him. Monnie and I were "Besties" doing everything together . One of my hardest days was moving away from them and our Philly gang. Have a good row with Jim, Carl., and all those oarsmen who have gone before you. Love, Jan, Heidi and Cassi. And Jim.

Carl made Carolyn and I feel the most welcome as we entered the Philadelphia rowing community and became Undinians. We will cherish our shared times at the Castle.

A life-long friend, rowing partner and Godfather to our daughter. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts but a lifetime of special memories of the times together, both in the boat and out.
