CATHERINE SPRATT Obituary

SPRATT
CATHERINE RITA, was born Nov. 28, 1937 and died Tuesday morning Jan. 5, 2016 at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Phila. surrounded by her family. She was a beloved daughter of Anna and Anthony Smith and nurtured by her dear Aunt Kate. She was the loving mother of Kelly (Pieter), Catherine (Kevin) and David (Michelle) and grand-mother of Michael, Colin, Catie, Madelyn and Holden. She is lovingly remembered by Juli. She is loved deeply and missed by Eric, Paul and Bryan. Although awarded a college scholarship, she ultimately passed on this for marriage and motherhood. Later, her perseverance showed as she finished her degree class by class while continuing to teach. She was very proud of the moment she took to the stage in cap and gown at an age at which many would have abandoned the dream.
Catherine was a gifted teacher for many years and delighted in the successes of her students. Although she taught many subjects, art was her favorite. As a teacher at Christ the King School for more than 25 years, she regularly taught art and found a way to help her young artists obtain scholarships to the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia for their Young Artist Program. Many times as we passed the Moore College on the Parkway, she would remember which students had been able to go there as a result of her finding a scholarship. She was dedicated to helping each of her students share her love of all things beautiful and all aspects of art. She was especially proud of this time in her life and how years later her students were still passionate about the arts. Many former students have noted that their budding interest in art was inspired by her love of all things artistic. A life celebration and Viewing will be held Thursday evening January 14th from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. at SWARTZ/GIVNISH FUNERAL HOME, 323 Washington Ave., Newtown, PA 18940. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Fri. morning 10:30 A.M. Jan. 15th, 2016 at St. Andrews Church, 81 Swamp Road., Newtown, PA. Int. will follow at Resurrection Cemetery on Hulmeville Road in Bensalem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Christ the King School, 3205 Chesterfield Road, Phila., PA 19114 for an art scholarship in her name. To view obituary on line visit.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother and heartfelt condolences to you and your family. I always admired Kay's strength and courage. She had a passion for life and was always determined to do whatever she could to accomplish her tasks. She was such a wonderful person. It was obvious by our conversations how much she loved her family. Words cannot describe how much she will be missed. I have many fond memories of Kay.
Sincerely,
Julie Cohn (16B31)

Kay Spratt will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. She was a great lady with a big, big heart, and a terrific Art teacher. I know that her former students really loved her and appreciated all that she did for them in helping them pursue their love of Art.

Kay and I were grade partners in the 5th Grade at Christ the King School. We were friends in school and outside. We shared many a laugh and funny story. I am sure that she is at peace and rests with the Lord. I know that she had great devotion to Mary and frequently prayed the Memorare. She will be remembered for a long time, due to the Art Award/Scholarship that will be awarded at Graduation every year.

I hope that this will help her beloved family in their mourning for her. You Mom was such a sweetheart with an infectious laugh and smile. Don't ever forget her big heart, and also her many kindnesses to others!

I am so glad that you are now resting peacefully, Kay. I am so sad as well. We will miss you. I will especially treasure our time together when we would watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune...what a blast we had! Thank you for the long talks, stories about growing up in Philly and sharing your love of arts and crafts with me. May God Bless Kelly and the rest of your family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love, Carolyn Thomas-Grubb and the entire Thomas Family
