DANIEL PRENDERGAST Obituary

PRENDERGAST

DANIEL "DAN", of Hershey's Mill in East Goshen, a retired union electrician, died on Thurs-day, April 4, 2013. Dan was in the company of his four loving and supportive children when he passed.
Dan was born on December 20, 1934 in South Philadelphia . He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Holland Buckson, whom Dan referred to as Buck and Nan. He attended Bregy Elementary School and South Philadelphia High School. He worked at Baldwin Locomotive and as a steamfitter before becoming an electrician with IBEW, Local Union 98.
Dan married Kathleen "Kass" Kennealy, daughter of the late Edward and Frances Kennealy on May 21, 1955. Dan and Kass were married for 57 years. Kass survived Dan, although she suffers from Alzheimers. Dan and Kass raised a family of four children: Lynn Gibbs of East Goshen, Dan Prendergast IV, presently of London, UK, Jim Prendergast of Malvern and Pat Prendergast of Piedmont, CA.
In 1966 Dan moved his family from South Philadelphia to Northeast Philadelphia. In 1976, Dan moved his family to Radnor Township. He was a devoted family man. He spoke proudly and often of his children and seven grand-children. Dan attended every one of his children's sporting events. He was particularly devoted to his sons' football teams. Dan was legendary for appearing mysteriously on August afternoons to watch Radnor High School practices. He never missed a high school or college football or lacrosse game when his sons were playing. He was a devoted and passionate fan. He knew all of the players and he remembered them fondly all of his life.
Dan was especially close to his only daughter, Lynn. They shared a very special and unique bond that can only be shared by a father and his only daughter. Dan was the proud "father of the bride" when Lynn married Neal Gibbs on November 24, 2001.
Although of modest education, Dan made a college education a top priority for his family. All of Dan and Kass's children are college graduates. All three of Dan's sons are graduates of the University of Pennsylvania and all three have graduate degrees. Lynn graduated from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in May 1989. Dan's oldest son, Dan IV was captain of Penn's football team in 1981. Dan's youngest son, Pat, was captain of Penn's lacrosse team in 1986.
Dan was a faith-filled man. He attended Mass on a weekly basis and he never missed confession on Saturday. Dan's sons served as altar boys at St. Jerome's in Philadelphia.
Dan is survived by his wife, Kass (nee Kennealy), his daughter, Lynn (the late Neal), Dan IV (Victoria), Jim (Kate), Patrick (Amie) and 7 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 10 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380. Interment will be at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

May the love of God surround you during this time of sorrow. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincere condolences to the family of my cousin Dan. Dan's father was my Uncle Danny. As a child and as a man Dan was much loved and admired by our Grandmom (Bessie) Prendergast and his five aunts and an uncle. Because Dan was a few years older as I was growing up I always thought of him as my big cousin. We have a picture in our family album when our big cousin took my brother Bill and me sledding. Our lives grew more parallel as we began raising our young families in St. Jerome's parish in Northeast Philly. About the time Dan and Kass moved their family to Radnor my family moved to the Washington DC area. I last saw Dan at my mother's (his Aunt Mary's) funeral a couple of years ago. He seemed then as I'll remember him – a man with an energy and exuberance for life.

There is never the right moment to experience such a loss to you and your family. You were fortunate to have your Dad in your life for a long time and he took so much pleasure in all of his kids.
Peace to him in the next life...
