DONALD WITTENBERG Obituary

WITTENBERG DONALD M. Of Philadelphia, PA passed on March 5, 2026, peacefully with family by his side. Beloved husband of Bonnie (nee Steele) and the late Louellan (nee Twersky); loving father of Steven (Jennifer) and Jan (Meghan); loving grandfather of Lillian Elizabeth, Aidan James Noonan and Leo Asher Yaron; son of the late Rose (nee Pilzer) and Joseph Wittenberg and survived by cherished cousins. Though proud of being a "true New Yorker" born in the Bronx, he ultimately was a Philadelphian through and through. He graduated Olney High School in 1964 followed by Temple University in 1969 with a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education. Donald was an educator for 42 years in the School District of Philadelphia, teaching at Meade, McClure, Rowen and Leeds Middle School; an Auxiliary Principal at Kenderton and Hanna Elementary Schools; Principal at Pennell and Franklin Elementary Schools; and completed his career as an Educational Facilities Planner in the central office. Donald maintained diverse interests. In addition to his involvement in Democratic politics for many years, he was a member, former Treasurer and President of B'nai B'rith Educators Unit. For almost 25 years, he was the Curator for the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center. He was honored by the Columbus Forum as the first recipient of their Unity Award for fostering cultural awareness. He was committed to traditions of his faith as an active congregant of numerous synagogues. He became interested in genealogical research tracking his family back to the 1700s and his late wife's family to the 1300s. He enjoyed gardening, was a life-long learner and an avid reader, particularly interested in history, math and trivia. He was best known for his sense of fairness, honesty, good sense of humor (proud of a "good" pun), and his passion for music, especially that of Frank Sinatra. Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 9:30 A.M. (EDT) precisely at GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S FUNERAL DIRECTORS, Suburban North. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park. Shiva will be observed at his late residence Sunday through Wednesday. Contributions in his memory may be made to either the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center or a charity of the donor's choice. www.goldsteinsfuneral.com

Dear Bonnie, Steve, and Jan, Don was our dental patient and a friend. I always looked forward to seeing Don when he came to the office. He was a loyal patient who started with Dr Stanley Meshkov, my father, and then became my patient. I appreciated the genealogy research he did on the Meshkov family. We always had nice visits and I valued the trust he had in my dental care. We send our deepest condolences to your family. Fondly, Michael Meshkov and Janine Reed

I'm glad that I got to meet and know Don thru my synagogue, MBIEE. With all the people that we met there, Don stood out. You never had to ask Don to help. He just got up and did whatever needed to be done. Helpful, pleasant to talk to, a friend to all. That is how I will remember him. May his memory be for a blessing.
