Douglas Ewbank Obituary

Ewbank Douglas C. Age 77, departed in Philadelphia. His roots were in Illinois, though he resided in Bucks County and, later, Philadelphia. He was our gentle giant, who stood at six feet eight inches. Professionally he was a demographer. His longest held position was with the Population Studies Center of the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained his research professorship, later becoming Emeritus before his retirement. The greater part of his work centered on public health programs in Africa. Later he explored the aging issues of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Douglas was a thoughtful and willful man who understood the responsibilities that came with his academic status. His unique approach to problem solving was admired by many, not the least of which were his students who carry on his legacy here and abroad. While Douglas treated his work in the most serious and disciplined means, it stood in contrast to the man who appreciated being moved and inspired by great art, music, literature, and interesting and passionate people. Douglas' extensive social history of Powelton Village became a passion with a purpose. He is survived by his husband, Scott Ryder, his sisters, Diane and Barbara, and their respective families. A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at the Arch Street Meeting, 320 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA. Services will commence at 1:30 P.M. Donations in Douglas' memory can made to the George School, Newtown, PA.
