Emily D'Ancona Obituary
EMILY JANE, 32, of Phila. died suddenly Wed., April 16, 2008, as the result of an auto accident on her way to work. Emily was born Oct. 30, 1975 in Phila., the beloved daughter of Edward and Amy (Allison) D'Ancona. She attended Green Street Friends School and later graduated from Germantown Friends High School. She received her Bachelor's Degree in English from Bryn Mawr College and her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Chestnut Hill College in May 2006. Emily was a kindergarten teacher in the Norristown School District, most recently at the Whitehall Elementary School. She understood little children's hearts. Emily is survived by her loving mother Amy D'Ancona of Phila. and her father Edward D'Ancona of Jenkintown; also by her beloved brother Joshua D' Ancona and sister-in-law Rebecca of Phila., her uncle Ronald D'Ancona, her dear Lean family and Preiser family relatives and countless friends who carry her love in their hearts. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 7 P.M. Wed., April 23, 2008 in the Sanctuary of The First United Methodist Church of Germantown, 6023 Germantown Ave., Phila. (Germantown and High St.) We ask persons wishing to make contributions to send them to The Emily D'Ancona Little Person's Fund, Germantown Friends School, Development Office, 31 W. it's been over 10 years Ms.D'ancona was the reason i was always happy to go to school my favorite memory was when she helped me get through my first day of school i started a day or two later then everyone else and she made sure everyone was nice and introduced me to a lot of friends even though i was really shy no matter what she always had a huge smile on her face she even came to eat at my family's restaurant she was such a caring person and to this day i still miss her may you rest in peace... thank you for everything.

Miss. Dancona was my favoirte teacher at Whitehall Elementary school. I was one of her students and she made my day everyday. I went to her for everthing. She understood me like no one else did. I will never forget her. I love You Miss. Dancona

When I think of Emily, I see the many times she and Hannah played as little girls. They met in kindergarten at Henry School, I think. Emily had such a sweet spirit and was a good person.
Her death is a loss for a world that needs people like her - as well as
a loss that has stopped me in my tracks.
I know I am fortunate to have known Emily as I did.

we must have been about 7. i think emily had come for a sleep over because breakfast was involved. my dads made scrambled eggs and toast. after breakfast emily and i were walking down the hall to do something somewhere and all of a sudden i just spewed eggs everywhere. the rest of the morning was spent in the bathroom; me kneeling on the floor, emily sitting on the edge of the bathtub talking to me, holding my hair back when i had to puke. I am grateful that my last memory of seeing her is a happy one. with a hug goodbye. I feel blessed, honored, lucky, to have her in my life. D'Anconas-please let me know if there's ever anything i can do for you.

I just came upon the news of Emily's passing and I cannot eloquently express my feelings. I knew Emily briefly as a classmate at GFS,

Emily was such a great loving, generous person that it is hard to believe that she is not with us. I come to work everyday, where she taught, and my heart is heavy with the sadness that she will not come through the door with her glowing smile to say hello.

I was very saddened by the sudden death of Miss D'ancona. My son was in the kindergarten class that she student taught in at Whitehall Elementary. He doesn't ever say much about what goes on in school or how his days are, but he would always say how nice Miss D'Ancona was. He would also say "I like her alot". For him, that was saying so much. She must have touched him in ways I can only imagine. I am glad she was able to reach him on that level.

Ed: although I never knew your daughter, Emily, I know the extreme sorrow and emotional upheaval you and your family are experiencing with the sudden and unexpected loss of your child. I taught with Emily last year at Paul V. Fly. Emily was always here late into the evening working and planning for the children. Her smile lit up her face and she would always take time to smile and say 'Hello', even when she was very busy. The children who were in her Kindergarten class last year continued to talk about her and the things she taught them during the school year. Emily was a wonderful, caring teacher and she will be missed by many. She touched the hearts of many children and adults through her teaching and caring ways.

I had the pleasure to work with Emily this year at Whitehall Elementary. Emily was wonderful teacher and colleague. She treated everyone with respect and was always friendly. Emily worked with me one summer at Firstrust Bank, on a special project while she was in college. It was such a pleasure to work with Emily-- She was always interesting and fun to talk to, always smiling and definitely a great worker! Everyone in the office just loved her. Such a kind soul ! Emily was a very kind and giving person. One memory I have of her is that, we both enjoyed going to Dunkin Donuts and getting drinks. One of her favorites was the orange coolata and my favorite is the iced coffee. We had numerous discussions about what we liked to drink and why we liked them. Emily always offered to pick me up a drink since she went through the drive thru almost every day. I never took her up on her offer. One morning, right before we went on winter break, Emily surprised me and brought me an iced coffee. It was the flavor of the month, gingerbread, and she thought I would enjoy it. It touched me that she was so kind and thoughtful that she would do that for me. Now, whenever I go to Dunkin Donuts and buy a drink I will think of Emily. I will miss seeing her every day.

I was terribly shocked and saddened to hear of Emily's death last week. It's been years since I've seen Emily, but I still remember her lovely face and warm spirit like it was yesterday. Emily loved the world and the world loved Emily!
My husband and I are living abroad right now, so I am unable to attend her memorial, though I really would like to be there.

I knew Emily through the words of my daughter. She greeted and made my daughter feel welcomed every morning at Whitehall. She was a happy smiling face my child got to see and know ever morning before and after school. My heart and prayers go out to the family and friends that knew Emily. I taught with Emily last year at Paul Fly Elementary School. She was a wonderful, caring person who truly loved her students and put everything she had into her teaching. I witnessed her performing selfless, thoughtful acts on a regular basis. For example, one evening after work, we found a dog without tags running loose outside in the parking lot. Emily called the police and waited out in the cold with the dog for half an hour until the situation was taken care of. I remember another instance where she surprised me by taking beautiful photographs of my winter concert here at Paul Fly so that I would have a keepsake to remember the event. I didn't ask her to do this, she just took it upon herself to do something thoughtful - that's the kind of person she was. I am truly saddened by her loss and send my prayers and deepest condolences to her family.

Emily's caring and joyful nature shone forth whenever I saw her. She could speak without words, through her actions and smile. Emily was a very kind hearted person. I only got to know her by helping out another teacher at Whitehall school. We went on a field trip together and she was singing songs on the bus with her students . She was very friendly ,outgoing person and I only had a few months to know her. What a shock to hear about the loss of Emily. I first met her when she came to work at Malvern Institute. What a wonderful young woman with a heart of gold, touching all who came in her path, and leaving a smile when thinking of her. I was able to spend the day with Miss D'Ancona on a field trip to the farm. I was so amazed by her. You could tell that she really loved being a teacher and the children adored her.

Emily was a wonderful teacher. I attended a field trip with Emily and her class this year and at every point in the process, in the Classroom, on the Bus and at the Farm a love for the children radiated from Emily. We could not have hoped for a better introduction to school for our son than what was provided by Miss. D'Ancona. She will be grately missed.

Emily was such a kind, generous and big-hearted person. Just a lovely human being in every way. I knew her through mutual friends from Bryn Mawr, and always enjoyed seeing her. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with her parents, brother, other relatives and close friends. She will be missed very much.
