FEODOR PITCAIRN Obituary

PITCAIRN FEODOR U. Of Huntingdon Valley, PA. passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 after a brief illness. He was 86. Mr. Pitcairn was born in the Netherlands to Rev. Theodore and Marÿke Urban Pitcairn, but lived most of his life in Bryn Athyn, PA. He attended the Academy of the New Church College (now Bryn Athyn College) and the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in Economics. Following service in the US Army, he began his career as a banker, first with Fidelity in their burgeoning International Investments Dept, and later with his family investment firm, the Pitcairn Trust Company, from which he retired in 1990. For the remainder of his life, Pitcairn devoted his professional interests to still photography and videography. He was the director and cinematographer of several documentaries on underwater wildlife, including Ocean Wilds (2001), Ocean Voyagers (2007), Ocean Odyssey (2008), and Ocean Voyagers (2010). He was also the author of four books, two of underwater landscapes, Cayman: Underwater Paradise (1979) and Hidden Seascapes (1984), which he co-authored with his wife, Kirstin; and two books of terrestrial landscapes, Dreaming Wild in the Heart of the Pennypack (2001) and Primordial Landscapes: Iceland Revealed (2015). He was the recipient of numerous awards, including Best Cinematography at the 2008 International Wildlife Film Festival. At the time of his death, he was working on an initiative called Landscapes for Life and Healing, through which he brought his landscapes to the walls of area hospitals. Mr. Pitcairn was a lifelong naturalist, both as a photographer and as an advisor. He was a member of both the Ocean Conservancy and the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust, and of the latter he also served a term as director. He was an active member of the Lord's New Church, a congregation started by his father, Rev. Theodore Pitcairn. He enjoyed attending the annual Bethlehem Bach Festival; was an avid ping-pong player; and claimed he had lost count of the number of countries he had visited on his travels. Mr. Pitcairn was preceded in death by his wife, Kirstin O. Pitcairn. He is survived by his daughters Naomi Pitcairn and Sharon Forsyth, sons Kevin and Jeremy Pitcairn; grandchildren Darwin, Adam, and Robin Forsyth, and Henry and Rebecca Pitcairn; and sisters Eshowe Pennink and Marcia Kennedy. Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust. JOHN E. STILES F.H.

We only learned today (Sep 24th) of the passing of our good friend, Feodor. We had no idea. We last visited him in October 2019. We are extremely sad. We extend our warmest wishes to his family.

Our sympathy to all in Feo's dear family. This was a person who truly tried his best in all things and succeeded in most of them. He cared deeply for people and animals, showing empathy for all. He hired superb helpers and embraced new technology with the excitement of a 9-year-old assembling a train set for the first time. His conservation successes and educational outreach through films and books might be surpassed only by David Attenborough. He created and oversaw major exhibits at the Smithsonian's Natural Museum History in Washington, D.C. in their Hall of Oceans and Iceland Revealed. He was an active long-time board member of Ocean Conservancy, hosting and participating in several events and rarely if ever missed a meeting. He charmed audiences of all sizes with his splendid photography and contagious sense of humor. Words cannot express how honored I feel to have known Feo as a non-profit associate and friend. Dive deep, experience beauty in nature, rest well.
