FREDERICK HARTMANN Obituary

HARTMANN FREDERICK W. "FRITZ" 1940-2021 Formerly of Newtown Square, Fritz died of complications of Lewy Body Dementia at his home in Ojai, CA where he had recently moved to be with his family. His love of teaching began at Lehigh when he was asked as an undergraduate to fill in for his professor who had unexpectedly passed away. He was also a visiting scholar at Cambridge University (England), Glasgow University (Scotland) and Perth University (Australia). He is survived by his love and wife of 54 years Bridget M. (Meek) Hartmann and his daughter Catherine, his brother David, David's wife Michelle, and David's daughter Christie. Also by numerous family members who will always miss him. He is predeceased by his son Andrew, his nephew Matthew, and his son-in-law Keith. Services will be arranged at a later date and will be private. Fritz was a great mentor to me, one of a short handful who had the greatest impact on my life. I'm glad to see the names of my wrestling teammates- John Barbis, Doug Ross and Tim Golding left their regards, too. Those were the days, weren't they? I just got the message, today. It's that time of our lives when we start losing our friends to the ravages of time.

Dear Bridget and Catherine,

I am so sorry to hear about the passive of Fritz. I have very fond memories of Fritz both in the wrestling room and while drinking beer. His laugh, humor, and advice to me and other crazy wrestlers meant a lot to us. Haverford was not exactly the easiest place to coach wrestling but Fritz found a way. My sympathies and best wishes go out to you and your family. John Barbis

As my math professor at Villanova helped me find self-confidence and remains for me that guy you want to be. I have thought often of him and some of the things he said throughout my 29 years as a math teacher.

Fritz was my wonderful wrestling coach at Haverford College, a mentor and a friend. He made a huge difference in helping me (and many other young men) grow while he coached us in addition to teaching at Villanova. I remember when I was struggling with understanding Taylor's Series in my freshman Calculus class, he helped me in such a clear and thoughtful way to master the concept, and I wasn't even one of his students. My wife, Jerilynn and I were privileged to socialize with him and you, Bridget, who lit up Fritz's life in the time after we graduated. Fritz was an unforgettable character and a true leader in a most positive sense. Jerilynn and I send our deepest condolences and love to you, Bridget, Catherine and all the family!
