Frederick Rosen Obituary

Frederick Rosen March 17,1938 - April 15, 2024 Equal parts genius and goofball who danced like no one was watching, never minced a word and was always working on the master plan. Fred was a first generation American born in 1938 in Philadelphia to Eastern European Jewish parents, Jake and Lillian Rosen. Living proof of the power of the American dream, he worked his way through school getting both his BA and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University. He married Pamela June Clark and had two charming daughters, Leslie and Jessica Rosen. Fred was hired at General Electric shortly after graduation where he spent the rest of his career working in one building as the name of the company changed and the US space program was born around him. If you've ever heard the saying when someone isn't very smart, "they are no rocket scientist"…well, Fred actually was a rocket scientist. If you have ever used anything that works with GPS, you can thank Fred for helping to design and build the satellites that made that possible. Have you ever seen pee floating inside a rocket ship? No?! Thanks Fred. He worked on the suction unit on the space toilet. Fred loved an adventure. He and his 2nd wife, Joan Ide visited over 60 countries. When they were at home in Royersford, he loved cycling, windsurfing and canoeing and also volunteered as a math tutor for Saint Gabriel's Hall. He had a million crazy jokes that no one loved more than him. He was a teller of tall tales. He sang funny songs. He had almost no filter for his perspective on everything. His work friends made him a plaque that said "Tell us how you really feel Fred." He hung it up in the kitchen. He is survived by his daughters, Leslie and Jessica Rosen and his nephews Jacob Rosen, Vincent Andre Canales and Joseph Charles Davido and niece Alicia Bloch - Extended family; Marilyn Jorgensen, Isabella Jorgensen, Sophia Jorgensen, Lora Yadao, Greg Keller, Brian Croom, Donna Dougherty, Karen McCormick Oy vey, Freddie…we can hardly express what a privilege it's been to know you.

I knew Fred slightly at work, but far better after we retired. We had lunch very frequently (weekly) after we retired and discussed politics, world events, science and anything else we could think of. He was liberal and I was conservative and we both tried (pleasantly) to convert each other. We both partially succeeded. He is, and will continue to be, missed.

Fred was an exceptional engineer, and more important a good friend.
You left his office sometimes smiling: sometimes shaking your head!

As a freshly-minted engineer, I worked in Fred's group at GE in the mid-1980s. Even when I made an obvious mistake in an analysis, Fred was patient and kind in trying to correct me. I can only say thanks for everything and warmest condolences to Fred's family.

I'd always wondered why I've never seen pee floating in a rocket ship. Mystery solved. Thanks for everything Freddie.
