My heart goes out to Ms. Papa, their 2 sons, and the Channel 6 Action News family. I have been watching Gary Papa on Action News since I was 13 years old in 1981 and it was gut-wrenching to see this horrible disease take his life before our eyes. Action News sports will not be the same without Gary's presence.

July 9,2009 God must have needed another angel to help him with his work in heaven. He will never really be gone ,he was much loved. I am from an old Phila.. family one of seven children and we all love Gary Pappa. My brother is a Cancer survivor and he and his family run and walk in all the Cancer Marathons, My husband passed away on April 6,2009 of pancreatic cancer, I'msure he welcomed Gary with open arms. They have a Saint Society up there and I know they are taking care and watching over all us down here. '' Many are called but few are chosen." i am 76 years old and me and my family will pray for him and for your family daily. True Philladelphians Never forget their heroes and he was one of the best'

I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area and left in 1999 to come to Ohio. In the 10 years I have been here I continued to follow all of Philadelphia's sports teams through 6ABC online. I have followed Gary's courageus battle with an awful disease that all too often take's really good people like Gary. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Kathleen and their two sons as well as to the rest of extended family including his family at 6ABC. Gary will be sorely missed by a lot of people, however, I know Gary is up with God and smiling on each and every one of us.

I do not think that I can remember a day without Gary Papa talking to me while watching the news.I grew up with channel 6, and as a Phillies game will never be the same without Harry Kalas, 6abc will not be the same without Gary Papa.My heart goes out to all of his family and loved ones. To Gary's family and channel 6 co-workers. All of Philly feel this big lost. I would watch the news just to see and listen to him do the psorts and that beautiful smile of his. His love for sports made everyone listen and his love for Philly made us all love him. I will never forget him not will he ever be replace in my heart. There will never be another sport anchor like him on any news channel he was one of a kind.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

We are so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. He was such a HUGE icon,a real champion for the battle for prostate cancer. We loved his on air presence. He was such an accomplished sports reporter,a true master at his craft. He had such a great sense of humor,always laughing and joking,carrying on with Jim and Dave. It was so great how he would make them smile and laugh,as well as we viewers at home.We loved his high school football highlights and his grooving to the music! Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Gary's wife,children,parents and siblings and family,and to his family at WPVI Channel 6. We will all miss him,he shall never be forgotten. Godspeed Brother!

My thoughts and prayers are with Gary's family both at home and at abc. I was born the same year as Gary and I have always been an action news fan. The whole team make us at home feel like we too are part of the family and that is why I feel we all loss a family member and a very special person. May Gary Papa rest in peace, he fought a long hard battle with cancer. My God bless his young family as well. We enjoyed watching Gary doing the sports segment on Channel 6, and when he would get Jim Gadner to laugh, Jim always looks so serious. We always looked for Gary, when he was on the air he gave 100%, we will miss his smile.
He is up in heaven with Harry now, he is in good company....God bless you all

I've been watching Gary since I was a kid. When he started fighting the cancer, my grandmom was too, and she and I always talked about his courage. She has since died. Gary will be truely missed

Look up enthusiasm and courage in the dictionary, they'll describe Gary's attitude about living. He lived life to the fullest, with great enthusiasm and in a very courageous manner. Gary, It was great to watch somebody who enjoyed what he did for a living he loved his job no matter what sport he was reporting on at the time. He can now do his reporting to God and the Angels for he has plenty of all star athletics with him now. He will be missed. "To the Papa Family" I lived in NJ since 1980 and always watched Gary from the time he joined channel 6. He was always upbeat and happy. He was a joy to watch. I am so very sorry for your loss. Like many others signing this guest book, I did not know Gary personally. But felt compelled to write a short note of sympathy to all his family and friends. I enjoy watching the news but when it came to the sports segment I rarely paid much attention because of not being a huge sports fan. But when Gary joined the team and did his broadcast I would find myself listening just because of his vibrant personality and genuine smile. He truly will be missed by so many people who's lives he touched, even in a small way like mine. I will really miss him. I loved seeing his gorgeous smile and hearing the warmth in his voice. I never knew anything about him, but always told others "I like that Gary Papa. He seems very genuine." As avid listeners of Channel 6 local and world news, my husband and i were deeply saddened by the passing of Gary Papa. We watched him intently as he continued to work in spite of his illness. We will always remember his tenacity. We pray for his entire family, including his ABC-Channel 6 family. My husband recently lost his 38 year old son to cancer. He, like Gary, kept going, kept working, and never complained. When I would watch Gary on Channel 6, it would remind me of my stepson. Gary always had a smile on his face no matter how ill he looked. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to his family.

Philadelphia definitely lost one of the good ones. Gary was one of a kind. He brought so much joy to the Channel 6 news room. What fun Gary was to watch when delivering the sports; He was down-to-earth and a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, and you really saw that when watching him. What little I did know about "sports" I probably learned just by watching Gary Papa. He brought so much excitement and fun to his reporting even if I didn't know the teams / scores, I'd watch him because he enjoyed reporting the information.

I loved watching him do the sports and not only myself, but my entire family will truly miss him. Take heart in knowing that his pain is no longer. Rest in peace Gary - we love you!
