Herman Rhodes Obituary

RHODES

REV. HERMAN A. RHODES, on the evening of August 16, 2004, the Lord summoned home one of his most faithful and mighty servants, Presiding Elder of the South District of the Philadelphia Conference of the First Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Presiding Elder Rhodes passed away at 6:20 pm due to complications from a stroke and heart attack he suffered in December of 2003. Rev. Rhodes, a fire and brimstone preacher from the red clay hills of Georgia, has been pastoring since 1930.
He is survived by his spouse of 65 years, Annie Mae Rhodes; 7 children, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grand-children; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his lone surviving sibling, his sister Mayor Emma Gresham of Keyesville GA.
On Saturday, August 21, 2004, beginning at 4 P.M., there will be a Memorial Service honoring his life at Ward AME Church, 43rd & Aspen Sts., Phila. PA. All are welcome to attend.

Uncle Herman,

It seems like just the other day I received a call from my mother, your baby sister, Mayor Emma Rene Gresham, and you were on the telephone line as well. I will forever cherish those memories of laughing, sharing, and loving. You have always been so special to us. It was the unconditional love you had for my mother that endeared you to my heart. You were the best big brother! You were the best uncle! We thank God for allowing you to be in our lives for as long as you were. We also thank God for welcoming you in to heaven, so that you could be free from pain...but most of all, you could see Grandma Ida, Grandpa Marvin, and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Until we meet again...

Your loving neice and family,

Dr. & Mrs. Carlos (Kay Gresham) Morrison and Bradley

The Rose Beyond The Wall

A rose once grew where all could see,

sheltered beside a garden wall,

And, as the days passed swiftly by,

it spread its branches, straight and tall....

One day, a beam of light shone through a crevice that had opened wide ~

The rose bent gently toward its warmth then passed beyond to the other side...Now, you who deeply feel its loss,be comforted ~ the rose blooms there ~

Its beauty even greater now,

nurtured by God's own loving care.

Uncle Herman was our family patriarch. A man of wisdom, a man of prayer, a man anointed by God to preach the gospel. Oh, how we'll miss the talks that we had with you. The joy we had just to be in your presence. We anticipated your every visit with excitement. You kept us laughing, rejoicing, and those moments when we called needing to hear a word from the Lord you were there. From childhood all of us loved hearing you preach. We truly paid attention. Thank you Lord for the gift of his life and having him placed within our family. Love, Lola Scott Russell (niece) and children: Alexis, Cassidy and Jameson
