JACOB HENRY Obituary

HENRY JACOB SCOTT June 19, 1996 - March 24, 2022 Jacob Scott Henry collapsed and died suddenly on March 24, 2022. He was 25. He had recently returned from serving a year in AmeriCorps NCCC, where his assignments included building houses with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans and working 60-hour weeks at COVID vaccination sites in Los Angeles. In November, he aced the LSAT and was preparing to apply to law schools. He planned to pursue a career in public service. Jacob was born June 19, 1996, in Joplin, Missouri, after a complication in his mom's pregnancy turned a weekend trip for a high school graduation into a six-week stay. He graduated from Moorestown High School, where he was a member of the rowing club and excelled at indoor competitions. He was recruited by several universities for heavyweight crew and chose Dartmouth College. In 2016, he did a study abroad in religion at the University of Edinburgh. In the summers of 2017 and 2018, he volunteered to work with children in Bosnia Herzegovina as part of a peace-building ministry of the New Jersey Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He also served in 2017 as a synod intern helping to write a voter's guide on social justice issues. He graduated from Dartmouth in 2019 with a degree in government with a concentration in world religions. Jacob was an avid video gamer and during the pandemic, served as Dungeon Master for a weekly Dungeons & Dragons game with his brother and two lifelong friends, Jack Fitzgerald and Ethan Cook. At the backyard ping pong table, it took Jacob only minutes to assess and eliminate most opponents. He loved the Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers, but his heart belonged to baseball. During weeks at the Jersey Shore, Jacob was torn between rushing into the waves and listening to an afternoon game. He'd tell you the best days of his life were spent with his dad in Citizens Bank Park watching the Phillies win the 2008 World Series (thanks to tickets from a Boston Red Sox fan who knew Jacob needed to be there). Jacob had high hopes for the 2022 team and had a ticket next to his brother for Opening Day. Along with you and many others, Jacob's life is being celebrated by his parents, Don and Cynthia Henry; brother Rick; aunts, uncles and cousins; and many friends who will miss his scholar's brain and generous heart. He was preceded in death by grandparents, H.E. (Dell) and Doreen Holm, Alice and Don Hunceker, and Don Henry Jr. A Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 P.M. Friday, April 1, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 61 E Rte 70, Marlton, NJ 08053. The Funeral will be at the church at 11 Saturday, April 2, with another Visitation preceding at 10 A.M. Masks are required. Guests are invited to wear Phillies shirts or anything red to celebrate Jacob's team. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jacob's honor to The Attic, a support group for LGBTQ+ youth in Philadelphia (https://atticyouthcenter.org/support-us/), or a contribution to a youth baseball program in your hometown. Deepest sympathy for the loss of Jacob. Although I did not know him, the love of his family and friends has touched me. May all know the blessed assurance from our Lord that though he is gone, he remains in your hearts and ours now and forever. May peace be with you all during this sorrowful time.

In Christ's love,
