You made my sons feel welcomed and special as they performed in the band. I treasure memories of the summer concerts from Baltimore to Atlantic City to Whitpain township. You were one of a kind. My deepest sympathy to the entire Madden family. A Mom who appreciated the time you spent with elementary school children.

Jim, Your presence is so missed at SBA; from the beginning you were a gift to us. Nover believing you would take the job and the pay cut, you proved me wrong. It was a privilege working with you; I still see you walking, later riding, down the corridor from the band room and into the music room to ask me about something. I miss that.
Claire I will be in touch again soon and plan a visit. God be with you, Claire. You're in my prayers.

Jim Madden was the music teacher that my elementary students loved. They were always excited and prepared for their lessons and band practices. They returned to class energized and excited about being part of the music program. Jim helped them understand that they could be part of that which is the creation of music.

I graduated from Wissahickon High School in 1972. Dr. Madden was my band director during those years. He was a wonderful person, teacher and musician and inspired me to become a band director. I have many great memories of high school band. I always loved the many times I would run into JIm at music festivals and conferences. He inspired many. My condolences to Claire and the family.

Jim/doctor/Mr. madden...however you knew him, was the perennial optimist, teacher, coach, cheerleader, mentor, role model and all around good guy, all wrapped up in one. I cannot repay him for all that he gave me, which only begins with a love of music, the tools to perform, and the joy of doing it, but I can certainly pay it forward as his memory will live on in me and so many others. Thank you, Jim, and my love to the entire Madden family.

Jim, Thank you for teaching me, as a child, to play the trumpet and for showing me that I could create through music. Little did I know that so much of my volunteer work and fun would be related to the Arts. Much of what I do according to passion has to do with music and the Arts. My trumpet is always nearby and I am even getting a new teacher to help me get back to it in a real way. You started the fire long ago.
It was great to work with you later in life as a colleague at Wissahickon. Thank you for the inspiration, friendship, encouragement and the fine example you provided in life.
Until we meet again...

“There are two kinds of teachers: the kind that fill you with so much quail shot that you can't move, and the kind that just give you a little prod behind and you jump to the skies.” - Robert Frost
Dr. Madden was a wonderful teacher, and a wonderful person. He helped facilitate some of my fondest memories at SBA, and I'll always remember him for his great sense of humor, for his patience, and for being a good role model--he was truly someone who loved what he did, and it showed. Deepest condolences to his family, friends, and students.

I would not be a music and band teacher today if it were not for the influential teachings of Dr. Madden. He sparked a love for music in my life at an early age that continued on through to a job that I love. I now get to pass on that same spark to my own students. My deepest sympathies to the family.
