My deepest sympathy for the loss of your Mother. Joan expressed her Love, Kindness and Open Heart so eloquently. In celebration of her life feel proud in that your Mom was a very Special Lady! She touched my Spirit, and over the years, I have often reflected on her wisdom and kind words. Love to you and yours.
Holding you in my thoughts and prayers, Sandy

Like many others, I spent many years in a Jewish- Christian Dialogue group being enlightened and charmed by the vibrant, and always searching, mind of Joan. To me she embodied the spirit of loving to learn, and her spirit was infectious.

I met Joan for the first time in February, 1987 at Keneseth Israel, Elkins Park. She and Dorothy Monteverde were co-leaders of a six-week Christian-Jewish dialogue sponsored jointly by the JCRC and the Cardinal's Commission on Human Relations. It was mainly due to the so-positive influence of Joan and Dorothy that a group of us, Jews, Catholics, and Protestants elected to continue in dialogue guided by Joan and Dorothy, meeting once a month at one or another's home. Eventually it was just Catholics and Jews in our dialogue group and we continued, meeting once a month for nine months of the year thru the following 25 years. Dorothy, Catholic, and Joan, Jewish were always our guiding lights in dialogue and on Dorothy's death in 2000, Joan continued as the binding spirit. She and Ben were always the consummate hosts when we met at their home but regardless where we met Joan's spirit of gentleness, openness, kindness, and candor always suffused our dialogue space.
At the introductory dialogue meeting at KI we were told that there would be two facilitators, one Catholic, one Jewish and beyond introducing themselves by name Dorothy and Joan did not otherwise identify themselves. Years later in one of our meetings I told the group that, at that initial session as the night went on, I tried to guess who was Catholic and who was Jewish between Dorothy and Joan and that I guessed Dorothy was Jewish and Joan, Catholic. They were both delighted at the story and Joan was complimented that their presentation of the need for, and benefits of interfaith dialogue, would have been so balanced that someone would have to guess at their faiths.
Joan, go with Ben, rest in peace. You have made a lasting contribution to love and understanding between faiths.
