My condolenses to his family, I feel a great loss after 50 years so I can only imagine how you must feel. All of us from our Camp Akiba days loved Jack.

Our condolences to the Jack Friel family. We will miss Jack's warm smile and quick jokes, his love for good people, family values, basketball and of course, we'll miss his big hugs. He made our visits to the Blue Bell Inn memorable. We'll probably still say, "Hey, where's Jack"? when we visit the Inn...then have a toast to his remembrance. He will truly be missed.

My Dad, Bill Mellon and Mr. Friel worked together at Blue Bell Inn. I had the wonderful experience of knowing Mr. Friel since I was a little girl and would visit my Dad at work. He was always so nice to my Mom, my sisters and brother and I. It was very hard for me to go back to Blue Bell after my Dad passed away. However when I finally did Mr. Friel made it so much easier. Recently I took my two daughters to see where their Grandpop worked. Unfortunately, they never met my Dad. They did have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Friel. I can hope that Mr. Frield will tell my Dad abour his grandaughters. While there, Mr. Friel gave me one of my Dad's jackets that he used to wear behind the bar. What a nice gesture that I will treasure forever. I know that my Dad will have a friend with him now. Thank you for sharing Mr. Friel with our family.

Warmest regards, Nicole (Nikki) Mellon.

Coach was an inspiration. He gave me an opportunity to be part of the North Catholic Basketball family. I was the least talented of the Shouldis' brothers. I was more of a cheerleader than a field general on the Coach's Championship Team. Today, I can no longer be on the sidelines. I am the field commander for the City of Philadelphia's Fire Department. Coach taught me how to deal with young men and woman. He was fair and firm. He was friendly, but never a pushover. He had a nice way to say NO. These are lifelong lessons. Coach's heart may have given out, but he will always be in the hearts/memories of the students (especially those in JUG)/players & fans of NC "Round Ball". Friel Fan Forever. Bill Shouldis

I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and players of Jack Friel.

I have known Coach since my days at Father Judge. Playing for him, as well as, against his North Catholic teams was an opportunity and a pleasure. The high standards he set for his students and players, both on and off the court surely examplified the true leader and great coach he was. Whenever I visited the Blue Bell he would always greet me with a smile and a story with his charming personality. It has certainly been an honor to have been included in his circle of friends. Jack will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,

With Jack’s passing, we lost a friend and a father figure as well as a genuinely phenomenal person; but neither of us would trade one minute of the heartache we feel today with missing the opportunity to know Jack. Our love and deepest sympathies go out to the Friel family and all of Jack’s friends. We’ll miss you so very much...

I just wanted to extend to the Friel Family my sincerest condolences. Jack was a great guy and a legend at the Blue Bell Inn. In fact, He was really the face at the door always there to greet you. He was a fabulous master of the game of basketball always sharing his insights, which usually were correct. He was at times a bit of a pisser too with his jokes, some of which I still tell years later. Jack was tough, firm, and fair. We'll miss you Jack.
