With deep fondness, I remember John, whom I knew as chief resident at Presbyterian University Medical Center. These many years later, I still grieve the untimely loss of this talented physician. May his soul rest in eternal love, and may light perpetual shine upon him.

I was starting as a cardiology fellow at AEMC when John was starting as an attending Cardiologist. He knew so much more then we and so it was important to him to teach us. It was important to him that we learn. When we did he somehow allowed a comradeship to develop which lasted beyond the training. I must say this characterized the Cardiology program of Dr. Harry Goldberg the Department Chair. John was a very good human being. His family suffered a grave loss as did his patients when he died too young.

I am speechless! John was a wise, compassionate Chief Resident at Presbyterian Hospital when I was an Intern there. He was a vital part of the Philadelphia medical community, and I am deeply saddened about his death. His family is in my prayers.

What a shock to find John's name in the alumni obituaries section of the Pennsylvania Gazette! I knew him when we were undergraduates at Penn. He was such a sweet guy, kind and caring, and he looked forward to a career helping others. My condolences to all of you on your untimely loss. May you be comforted by memories of happy times together.

I was so sorry to read about John's death in the Pennsylvania Gazette just now. I have not seen him in many years but remember him well. We were friends and classmates at Penn Med School in the mid seventies and also interns together at Presbyterian Hospital 1976-77. John was the nicest guy, a really wonderful person and classmate. My sincerest sympathy to his family.

Dear Barbara, Julie and Sam
I just received this terrible news from my mother who lives in Florida. The community's loss is great. Your loss is greater.
As you may remember, John and I met in 1991 when John was moving into full-time private practice. I "replaced" John as director of the Cardiac Care Unit at Einstein Medical Center. The quotes indicate that John was, and is, irreplaceable. John helped me learn the job of CCU director, although I distinctly remember that some of the physicians and unit staff felt that no one -- absolutely no one -- could come close to being as good as John.
Along with Morrie Kotler and a few others, John was instrumental in introducing me to the Einstein community. Working with him for many years, I quickly learned of the tremendous respect accorded John. Respect that was well deserved, for John was a meticulous cardiologist. The residents and fellows all-too-well remember being "grilled" about the details of the course and care of his patients.
John's joy of family was ever-present. At Julie's and Sam's Bat Mitzvahs, he expressed delight with stories of affection and smiles of happiness, not to mention the dancing!
I already miss him.

I have many fond memories of John from AEMC days in the CCU! I remember John as an extremely intelligent cardiologist willing to share his knowledge but what set him apart was his genuine compassion for his patients. A kind and gentle giant I feel privileged to have worked with him. My deepest sympathies to Barbara and his daughters, who he adored. You will be in my prayers for Gods love and peace in the days ahead.
Sincerely,

To the family:
John lived 2 doors down from our family on Sharpnack Street in Philadelphia. I was a few years younger than John, and remember looking up to him, particularly his shelf of sports trophies from Little League. We were friendly with John and his parents. My mom still tells stories of John walking me to elementary school. Sorry to hear of your loss - wanted to share this memory of John from long ago...

John was one of the kindest, most empathetic people I've ever met. I felt privileged to be a patient of his; not only because of his skill as a surgeon but because of his ability to heal a wounded soul. May G-d bless you and keep you in this difficult time.

Dr. John was my late husband's doctor for many years. I could never ever find the words to express our love for this man. He was with me every step of the way when my husband passed. He not only cared for my husband, but his compassion for what I was going through at that time I will never forget. So sad that such a gifted man was taken from the world much, much too soon. My condolences to his family
He will live in the hearts of many forever.
Sincerely

John was my high school classmate who, as it turned out, treated my father in his last days. He showed tremendous compassion and sensitivity towards my parents during that most difficult time. All of us in his class were well aware of John's intellectual brilliance, but it was equaled, if not exceeded, by his care and compassion for his patients. He will be sorely missed.

During my office visits to PAH&V John and I discussed baseball as much as my medical condition. Many times I needed inspiration to go on and someone to tell me everything would be alright. John always found a way to make me look on the bright side. John was my doctor but he will always be in my thoughts. I will miss him!

John was my student in calculus at Penn many long years ago but I remember him as a bright student with an engaging personality. When my wife began using computing in her teaching at Bryn Mawr, John wrote the computer program that she used. It was used for many years. I was not in contact over these many years but I do have fond memories. Condolences to his family.

John Wertheimer was not only my doctor and my health advisor but I came to know him later as a friend! He was a good man. Kind, sincere, generous, and caring. I remember how he held my hand the first time I was in the Cath Lab. The calls to "check up on me' when I was not well, and most recently to talk about the baseball game the last time I was in to the office as his patient. Dr. Wertheimer saved my life and gave me hope. I now want to give that same hope to those that are left to mourn him. He will be missed but forever loved!

I first met Dr.Wertheimer in 1990 when I was a new nurse working on the cardiology floor at Einstein Hospital. I came to respect him so much that I took my own Mother to him when she started having heart problems a few years later. She saw him regularly for the next 15+ years. What a wonderful man he was. His knowledge and command of cardiac disease undoubtedly kept my mother's condition under control. More importantly, his calm and reassuring demeanor and approach kept her mind at ease. The medical world has lost a legend in him. I am glad he is not suffering and I hope his family finds peace and comfort in knowing just what a difference he made in the lives of so many.

Dear Barbara, Julie and Sam - My wholehearted condolences to you for the loss of a great man, husband and father. I first met John when driving Sam and Julie to Spring Lake Farm, then again with Julie to meet Ed Rendell. He supported you Barbara during your stellar WMP performances. For me, he was a gifted, enthusiastic and talented doctor who saved the life of my father. Words can never thank him for all that he has done for me and for the entire medical community.
May your grief and sadness be tempered by so many memories of such an incredible man.
