Johnny Callison Obituary

PHILADELPHIA - Johnny Callison, a three-time All-Star outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies, has died at age 67, according to a team spokesman.

Callison died Thursday at Abington Hospital following an illness, Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk said. He had lived in Glenside.

Born in Oklahoma on March 12, 1939, Callison began his major league career with the Chicago White Sox in 1958. He established himself as one of the top players in the National League after being traded to Philadelphia two years later.

He became a fan favorite during his 10 seasons with the Phillies and finished second in MVP voting behind St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Ken Boyer in 1964.

Callison also played two seasons with the Chicago Cubs and two more with the New York Yankees before retiring following the 1973 season.

Callison hit .264 with 226 homers and 840 RBIs in 1,886 games over 16 seasons. He was named MVP of the 1964 All-Star game after hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off Red Sox reliever Dick Raddatz to give the National League a 7-4 win at Shea Stadium.

Later that year, Callison was part of the Phillies team that infamously wasted a 6 1/2-game lead with only 12 games remaining in the regular season by losing 10 straight.

A left-handed hitter, Callison batted .274 with 31 homers and 104 RBIs in 1964. He hit .262 with 31 homers and 102 RBIs the following year.

Callison was named to the NL All-Star team in 1962, 1964 and 1965.

In 1964 I was 7 years old and lived in the same apartment complex, Mount Vernon Gardens apts off Edgehill road, as Mr Callison and his family. His building was literally 40 ft out side of our back bedroom window. I knew his daughter Lori and we were friends and used to play in the apartment complex. She was my first crush and I'd like to think that I was hers too. I didn't know much about baseball then and didn't have anybody in my family to help me appreciate it. We moved away in January of 65. I did finally become a pretty major sports geek in 69 and 70. And I was always proud to point out that I used to live next door to Johnny Callison and also in the same apartment complex was Clayton Dalrymple the catcher for the Phillies at the time. I often wonder what my life would have looked like if we had not moved away when we did. I might have had a earlier and much different love affair with Phillies baseball, and you never know maybe my personal love life might have been much different too. Rest in Peace Mr Callison and best wishes to all your daughters and I hope Laurie (maybe Lori) remembers our fun times. Go PHILLIES, best record in baseball at this writing.

I´ve loved the Phillies since the 1950s as a youngster. My favorite player ever was Johnny Callison who I loved to watch play. I thought him and Roberto Clemente were the best ever at throwing out runners from the outfield. I went to the all star game he won with a home run. I saw him play a lot but I never met him. But I´m sure he was a very nice person.

Johnny was my childhood baseball hero, when we chose up sides for a game in South Philly we all wanted to be Johnny Callison. Reading about Johnny transports me back to those hot summer days playing baseball at Mosconi Park.

I was born a day before Mr.Callison, of course at a later date. Not sure I can recall, when I used to go to as many games as my dad would be able to take me. I always made sure he would get right field bleacher seats. Leave early just to be able to get a glimpse of #6@ his teamates. No words. Baseball has changed but never those memories. Thank u Mr. Callison. I still look over at the signature ball and a signature saying "To Johnny from Johnny Callison. God Bless ur family.

6 was my favorite player growing up. My Dad had World Series tickets in 1964 that the Phillies sold before the season ended. Callison was a true ball player. He checked off all the boxes. RIP 6.

He became my Idol at a very young age. I watched him throw out a guy for the Giantsfrom right field without a bounce. Amazing arm. I, too played right field and lefthanded and did the same but not as a pro. I was delighted to have dinner with him, at Vincent's Restaurant on Route 611 and Bristol Road in Warrington one lucky night. I was sitting at the bar and he came in. We had drinks and he asked me to join him and friends for dinner. Well, that made my night and my baseball fantasy. I knew he was tending bar at a restaurant called Tomato's in Doylestown and had several occasions to reminisce about his career. Just as Pete Rose is Charlie Hustle, Johnny is Mr. Baseball.

I have the same sentiments that every one has contributed. I became a friend of Johnny's when he worked at the used car agency on Roosevelt Blv. in N. Philadeliphia, when I resided in Newtown, Pa. No matter how busy he would be, he always was gracious to give time to a fan and friend. I think of him often yet today as their isn't a major leaguer with his arm, respect for the game and his smile.....Baseball Hank, January 19, 2018

My brother Dan and I were Phillies fans huge back in the day. My favorite player was Dick Allen (Richie back then) and Johnnie Callison was his! Our first game.to Connie Mack Stadium was.amazing in 1965. Callison would catch the fly balls behind his back in warm-ups. He was the essence of class! Miss those simple days of our youth.

Johnny Collision was my childhood favorite baseball player. I even switched to left handed hitting to copy him. I managed to visit East Bakersfield High School just last month and will fondly remember looking at the school and town he grew up in. I got to see him many times at Connie Mack and watch him play that right field wall. I am currently reading his book and have a signed copy of the 1964 Sports Illustrated Book that hangs proudly in the East Bakersfield High Administration Area. RIP Johnny.

I first saw Johnny at Connie Mack Stadium when my grandparents took me to see the Phils play the Cards on August 31, 1963. I was 8 years old. Johnny has always been and will always be my favorite player. In 1964 I sent an 8 x 6 black and white photo of Johnny to him in care of the Phillies with a letter asking him to sign and return it. Months went by and I assumed he never saw my letter. One day that winter my Mom called me in from the backyard and said I had received something in the mail. It was Johnny's photo with his signature. I was ecstatic. I remember so many great moments watching him play. Last month I was in Louisville and went to the Hillerich & Bradsby museum and located Johnny's signature burned into a piece of wood on the wall of fame in the lobby of the museum. I loved Johnny Callison!

When I was a little boy my favorite Baseball player was Mickey Mantle, however, that all changed in 1961 when I saw Johnny play. Not only was he the Best player for the Phils during the 1960s, but I think he was the Best Rightfielder in the NL from 1962 thru 1965. My favorite memory of Johnny happen on 9/22/62 when my father took me Connnie Mack to see the Phils vs. Milw. Braves. The pitcher that night for the Braves was Warren Spahn and with the score tied at 1 and 1 out in the bottom of the 9th Johnnie hit a towering drive to RF that hit the foul poll for a walk off homerun. I remember Spahn tipping his cap to Johnny as he walked off the mound & H. Arron tossing the ball that had bounced back into RF over the wall. WOW that was Awesome !! Yes Johnny will always be The Man !!

Johnny was my favorite player to emulate when I was growing up in Roslyn, right near Glenside where he lived. I remember going to a game with my dad and him catching a long drive to the wall, stumbling to turn, he fell backward and caught the ball between his legs, falling to the ground. I was totally won over. Plus his gunner arm, throwing out many who tried to go to third. I finally bought an origional Callison Philly uniform, he will live forever in my eyes as the best.

Johnny was a little younger than me but I always looked up to him and he, unlike myself, made it to the big show.

I played little league baseball with Johnny in the summer of 1950 in Bakersfield california. at that time he played 3rd base, he had a cannon throw even then, i played 1st base.. you could see then he was about 2 cuts above the rest of us..

I was tremendously shocked and saddened when I heard of Johnny's death. I was a young girl just discovering baseball when John was on the Phillies in the 60's and I was crazy about him. After reading everyone's remarks, I can see I was one of many who can trace their love of baseball back to him. What a tribute to him that even years after his death, we still feel compelled to read about him and to write our condolences. What a role model.

What a class act! Every kid growing up in Eastern Pennsylvania wanted to be Johnny Callison. And every parent was just fine with that idea. In Little League, Babe Ruth, High School, and Legion ball we all fought to be #6 just like the one who was #1 in our hearts.

Johnny Callison was my childhood hero. I became a Phillies fan in 1964 at the young age of ten and never stopped loving my Phillies. I learned to bat left handed (a natural righthander) because I wanted to be just like my hero Johnny Callison. I thought the Phillies world was going to come to an end when he was traded away. My one regret was in the mid 70's while a Temple Univ. pharmacy student I didn't stop to meet him at the car dealership he worked at the end of N. Broard Street. My internet nickname is Phillies 1964 and my favorite number is still # 6 a testament to my love for Johnny!!!! I can't believe it's been 3 years since he passed on. 2006 was a very bad year for me personally and when I heard of Johnny's passing it was like what else can go wrong this year!!! I just discovered this site here in 2009! My very best to the whole Callison family. Johnny left us way too soon. I only wish I had met him. He was a giant for me in the game of baseball.

I can only agree with the person that said"a true gentleman of the game" and like another person said "I adopted Johnny Callison as my personal hero" I was bouncing off the walls as a kid when he won the all-star for the NL. I live in Nebraska now and always wished, on one of my return trips to PA., I might meet him, but it never happened. He was a great guy and he is missed.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to Mrs. Callison and Johnny's daughters and their families. Johnny was the favorite Phillie of my sister, brother and me during the 1960's, and always. My sister actually called Dianne Callison when she was 10 years old to tell her how much we LOVED her husband. Johnny was a great ballplayer and I'm sorry God called him early, but we know one day we will see him in Eternal Life! God Bless his family! I thank you Johnny with all my heart for bringing me baseball. I fell for your game in the early sixties, watching the Phillies on the tube. When my Dad brought me to Connie Mack one Saturday afternoon to see the bright green field the bleached white w/red pin strips unies and my hero. Johnny Callison. Mr. Clutch. I'll never forget the sound of the ball hitting the glove, the ball off the bat,the aromas in the stands, the excitement generated when Johnny would gun down a runner from third from the deepest part of the right field corner by the foul poll,ON THE FLY. Clay Dalremple had time for a cup of coffee whiting for the runner. Thank you Johnny for signing my yearbook, your hard cover bio and allowing me to have my photograph taken with you. I'm only 55 and if I do grow up, I want to be just like you. God bless.

The biggest day in my early teens was when my father took me to see a Phillies game. I made him get right field tickets so I could be close to my Johnny, #6. I watched every game during the summers & would write down every strike, ball, etc. & send the sheets to my brother, who was in boy scout camp. Johnny was the best, and was a good sport & dignified man. All my best to his family.

My "first crush" was Johnny Callison. He's the reason I am a die-hard Phillies phan to this day. I was a teenager back in the mid-60s and just thought he was the best looking guy I ever saw. Oh, and he could play baseball, too. ;-D I'll never forget his winning home run in the All Star game, and the time he was so sick that he needed someone to help him put his jacket on because his hands were shaking ... but he played that game and helped them win. I still have, and treasure, all of my baseball cards, autographed pictures, magazine and newspaper articles -- anything I could find that mentioned him. My favorite number is still #6.
I had read through the years that he had health problems for some time, but now he's at peace. Maybe he can help coach the Phillies from Heaven's dugout. My sympathies to his wife and family.

As so many have written here, a part of our youth dies with Johnny Callison. After suffering through the late '50's and early '60's, we finally had a good team ...and a hero! There is a quote from Cookie Rojas in Johnny's autobiography. I won't quote the whole thing (it's on pg 129), but he says among other things that Johnny was "honest and open and held malice toward none." He also says Johnny was "all business" on the field and "a player everyone could count on." It's those attributes, as much as his sweet swing and cannon arm, that made him my boyhood hero. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest assured that he is in heaven ...and there must be baseball there or they wouldn't call it heaven. Just let Dick Radatz try to sneak another fast ball by him!!!

1964 was the year I graduated from high school, and I had been a Phillies fan for the last several years. This looked like the year that the Phillies were finally going to win the pennant. When Johnny hit that homerun to win the All Star game, I knew it definitely was the Phillies' year. Alas, it was not to be. BUT, the 1964 Phillies will always be my favorie team, and Johnny was one of the best on the team. He will live on in the memory of many Phillies fans.

SO SORRY TO HEAR OF JOHNNY'S PASSING. HE WAS MY FAVORITE PLAYER WHILE HE WAS WITH THE CUBS. WHEN PLAYING BALL AS A KID, I WOULD COPY HIS STYLE WHILE FIELDING AND HIS WAY OF TROTTING AROUND THE BASES AFTER HE HIT A HOMERUN. HE HAD A CERTAIN CLASS ABOUT HIM AND I WOULD WEAR BATTING GLOVE JUST LIKE HIM. I ALSO WORE GLASSES WHILE BATTING. SO MANY GREAT MEMORIES FROM MY YOUTH.
AGAIN, MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO THE CALLISONS ON THE LOSS OF MY FAVORITE PLAYER.

In 1964 I was pictured on the front page of the Philadelphia Daily News carrying a sign that read "Callison for President." I was a teenage girl then who went with a group of friends to the Philadelphia Airport to welcome the Phillies home from an away trip. My deepest condolences to the entire Callison Family. Johnny Callison was my first childhood hero, and to this day my favorite baseball player of all time. He played the game the right way. The memories of the few games that i saw at Connie Mack Stadium, with Johnny in right field and at the plate, are forever etched in my memory. Johnny Callison's name brings back wonderful childhood memories for me. I was 9 years old in 1964 and I remember watching the Phillies games on TV with my dad on Sunday afternoons at my grandmother's house. I am a Phillies Phanatic to this day thanks to Johnny Callison, and his name will always bring back those wonderful memories for me. My prayers go out for you and for your family at this difficult time. Thank you Johnny.

Please accept my condolences.
Johnny Callison was my childhood and adult hero. He inspired me to play baseball and especially right field. I began playing right field in 1966. That year my team (Madison AA) in Philadelphia's Samuel Recreation League went 20-0. I felt like Johnny Callison brought me good luck. There was never a season without a memory of Johnny on and off the field. As a young adult I saw John working in the car business on the Boulevard and said to myself he is doing well at this too. I never heard a negative about John from anyone in the media or on the street. I heard John interviewed several times over the years concerning illness and he always answered with a positive attitude. I again thought about John earlier this year when I was ill and thought about his inspirational interviews to get me through hard times. Everything about John was positive and I'm sure his memory will live on forever. I will make sure.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to Johnny's entire family. I am 56 years old and grew up following the Phillies. Johnny was and still is my favorite player. When I played baseball, I was primarily a catcher, however, I would pretend I was Johnny and would emulate him when I batted. To this day, I have Johnny Callison photographs and a signed drawing I did of him many years ago. I had the privelege of meeting Johnny in person through Paul Owens when I was a youngster in Connie Mack Stadium and it was a time I will never forget. He was my baseball hero! May God bless you and your family Johnny!

Johnny was one of the greatest ball players of his time. He made a Phillie fan out of me. He was a real team player. I can recall an evening game at Connie Mack stadium when Johnny was ill. We were sitting in the bleachers along right field. He was out of the game, but things were not going too well and Gene Mauch put him back in. It was a cool night and Johnny was out there with a jacket on to keep warm, but he was out there. Now that is team playing. I never got to meet him and tell him how highly I thought of him. I feel badly about that. He was a guy I looked up to as a young teenager. My condolences to his family, and my thanks for sharing him back in those years when being on the road didn't include jet travel and cell phones, but long periods away and out of touch. He will be missed. Your a good man Johnny Callison, you taught me a lot about team playing.

May John rest in peace! I saw him play many times in Philly, and always told my eldest son that he should watch Johhny closely and see what a great right fielder should be doing. I know he was known as a slugger, but his rocket arm truly impressd me most! He threw guys out at the plate who would have scored on a lesser arm!

Johnny was a favorite of my youth, his hustle and defense were simply great. His down to earth personality fit that ball club so well. A gentle leader! God bless you Johnny Callison. Gene Mauch and Chris Short are there to greet you.

When I was a kid growing up in the 60's,my Dad tried to get me to bat righty because I threw righty, but nothing could stop me from batting lefty. "Just like Johnny Callison ," my dad would say. Being a lifelong Phillies and Johnny Callison fan, I wore the number 6 through my adult ballplaying years in Johnny's honor. To this day when I'm asked who my favorite ballplayer was,I always say the greatest rightfielder in Phillies history,Johnny Callison. My condolences to his wife and family. My prayers are with you. Thanks for the memories. They'll never die.

My deepest sympathy to Johhny Callison's family. I only met him once--in 1964--at a Philly department store where he, Jim Bunning, and Richie Allen were signing autographs, and it was a moment I'll never forget. Awesome ballplayer, rocket arm, and the smoothest lefthanded swing in baseball at the time. Class act, who should have been the MVP in '64. Probably should be in the Hall of Fame for Clutch Players. I am so grateful to my good friend, Wayne Jacoby, who called from Philly this afternoon to tell me the sad news. Johnny will be missed.

As a kid from Harrisburg in the mid 60's, it was always a thrill to take the train to Philly to see my favorite player, Johnny Callison, play in Connie Mack Stadium. I remember how Johnny used to always be pulling up his socks and straightening his cap while standing in right field. Nobody could play a ball off that right field wall like he could. To the Callison family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

You cannot have been a Phillies fan in the 60's and not have loved Johnny Callison. His name is synonymous with the word Phillies. He was a great player and a class act. A bit of our childhood leaves us with Johnny's passing but the memories are forever. My condolences to his entire family.

One of the smoothest outfielders in Phillies history. He was consistent, showed up to play every day. There were no holes in his game. I have fond memories of John and the Phillies teams of that era.

Rest Peacefully John.

My all-time favorite player...he could do it all. I learned to be a left-handed batter because of his sweet swing. My favorite birthday gift was when my 10 year old son, without my knowledge went to card show and brought back an autographed 8x10 photo for my 37th b-day back in 1991. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Callison family. Thanks John!
