It broke my heart to read of Joes passing. At precisely the time when we need men of principle and leadership the most, it is hard to imagine a world without him. His energy, ideals and his commitment to always do the most selfless task first made Joe a role model for my life. When I first came to Penn and he was Dean, he passed out reading lists to his staff that they shared with me and they were marvelous! I worked with him on PRIME and witnessed firsthand his heartfelt commitment to helping young students to discover the power of engineering, and I believe that passion is what led me to go to work in Penn Engineering. The world has lost a remarkable man and while memories of his strength, passion and humor will bring us all comfort, so many, myself included, will miss him dearly! May you have all of the love, hope and strength that you need to face the future.

One of my favorite bosses, in 30 years of federal and military service. A mentor and friend. A man of integrity. And a fellow Navy officer! He hosted my promotion to Navy Captain (O-6) in his NSF office, even though it had nothing to do with our NSF positions--and seemed so proud to do so. I haven't seen him in perhaps 15 years, but always hoped to have lunch with him again, somehow and somewhere. Now I know that isn't possible.
