Joseph Heffernan Obituary

HEFFERNAN
JOSEPH E. "DEWEY', JR. , died on September 9, 2006, with his wife Jeanine providing loving care for him throughout his illness. He was 75. Dewey was born in Philadelphia to the late Joseph E. Sr. and Gertrude Waters Heffernan. A graduate of Saint Joseph's Prep, he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering from Catholic University of America in Washington DC. After two years in the US Air Force Dewey joined his father's construction company, and subsequently formed his own design, engineering and building firm. He was involved in the design and construction of over 36 million square feet of commercial buildings. The name "Heffernan" on a building was like "Sterling" on silver. An entrepreneur and businessman his entire life, Dewey was the founder of Babylon Business Campus in Horsham PA, and developed residential flying and golf communities such as Avallon in Chalfont, PA, and Eagle's Crest and Hawk's Nest in Port Orange, FL. Dewey was a private pilot, and member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Cessna Pilots Association, EAA and the Quiet Birdmen. Over the years he additionally enjoyed boating, golf, skiing and worldwide travel. Dewey will be remembered as a uniquely generous man. He was endlessly giving of his time, intellect and financial support for people and organizations he cherished. He supported numerous charitable and civic organizations including the AJ Foundation for Children with Autism, Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation, Catholic University Scholarship Fund and the American Diabetes Association. In addition to his wife, Mr. Heffernan is survived by his daughter Nora and son Joseph E. III, both of Bucks County; grandson Joseph John; stepchildren Jancine, Lauren and Ryan; step-grandchildren Jamie, Joseph and Kali; siblings Elizabeth Shay, Ivinetta Weeks, John Heffernan and their families. He will be deeply missed by his family and the countless friends whose lives he touched. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Wednesday, from 6 to 8 P.M. at THE JOSEPH A. FLUEHR III FUNERAL HOME, 241 E. Butler Ave. (Route 202 at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA and Funeral Mass 11 A.M. on Thursday, at the Church of St. Jude, 321 W. Butler Ave, Chalfont, PA 18914. Interment will follow at St John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont, PA. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

I remember holding my stomach as Dewey tried to make his plane touch a certain spot on the runway... over and over again. He was doing it for some contest. Nora looked a bit green as well. Most of all, I remember with great gratitude how Dewey took Nora & I on a tour of Ireland around Christmas almost 30 years ago. Dewey was a generous man who followed the beat of his own drummer, in his own time, and as Nora said, "an era has ended".
