Just learned of Joe's passing after having lost touch many years ago. Joe was a capable and trusted officer under my command of a Special Forces company in the Army Reserve. He was also a good friend. Quick anecdote, typical of Joe: One Sunday in January 1980 he came into my office during a USAR drill weekend and pleaded some time off so he could, as a decades-long Eagles season ticket holder, attend a crucial playoff game against Dallas that eventually led to the Eagles 1981 Super Bowl appearance. I sternly but jokingly said I couldn't believe he'd ask for such a breach of his duties without offering me an opportunity to join him...at which point he reached into his pocket and handed me his second ticket. Me to the Sergeant Major: "Captain Mack and I'll be in the area all day." Army code for "We're outta here!"

I am so sorry to see Joe's notice on his High School FB page. My brother and I knew him only through grade school but enjoyed his humor. Joe was a good guy then and from what I've been reading he made the most of his life with a loving family and friends. Joe certainly devoted his life to people and our country and I respect and admire him. Just to see his name and remember him brought back nice memories as I am sure it will for all who knew him. May Joe rest in peace and may the Lord and His family bless Joe and each of you.

Joe Mack was definitely someone to experience. Being his aide for about 6 years he taughtt me more about the PFD than I ever expected to learn. His firm yet gentle way of going about getting things done was a pleasure to watch. He was able to teach without you feeling like you were being taught. He liked taking care of men and women under him, a true leader. Rest in Peace my friend

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Chief Mack. As a newly appointed Firefighter to E-70 in 1995, I found Chief Mack to be an inspiring leader, a great fire-ground commander and a gentleman to anyone he met. His Jeopardy abilities were second to none! RIP Chief...

A good man, and a pleasure to work with and for, who was always willing to share his counsel. He was a master of dead pan humor, and the firm handshake. Rest easy Joe.

Dear Bernie and Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Joe. He was a unique individual and leader in PFD. His dry sense of humor was fun to experience. I often sought out his advise. His frequent disappearances for military duty created its own "Where's Waldo" game in the department. I will always keep Joe in my thoughts and prayers.

I cannot express my deep sorrow for Chief Mack.
His greatest accomplishments in life do not compare with the kindness that he displayed for everyone that he knew. He was a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed.
