Laurence Silberman Obituary

Silberman Judge Laurence H. A member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit passed away on October 2, 2022 at his home due to complications related to a viral illness. A public servant of the highest order, Judge Silberman served the Nation with great distinction for more than half a century. He earned Senate confirmation for five different positions spanning an extraordinarily wide range of duties including Deputy Attorney General and Ambassador to Yugoslavia. For his work on U.S. intelligence, he received the Nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was during his tenure of over thirty-five years on the Court of Appeals, however, where Judge Silberman made his most profound contributions to the country and rule of law. With a twinkle in his eye, he was always ready with a joke, for a spirited debate, or discussion of a favorite historical anecdote. Judge Silberman was a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School. Judge Silberman was married to his first wife, Rosalie Gaull ("Ricky") Silberman for 50 years. After Ricky's passing, he married Patricia Winn Silberman. He leaves behind his wife, his sister, Jan Silberman Karzen, as well as his children, Robert Silberman, Katherine Fischer, Annie Otis, step children, Matthew Winn and Amanda Winn Lee, 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. The family will celebrate a private burial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Judge Silberman's honor be directed to Dr. Neil Bressler and the Retina Division of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University or to the Rosalie Gaull Silberman campus of the DC Prep Charter School in Washington, DC.
