Lorraine Truitt Obituary

Truitt Lorraine Jean (nee Haas) April 22, 1940 - August 5, 2025 A devoted educator and beloved member of her community, passed away at home on August 5, 2025, following a courageous battle with squamous cell carcinoma. She was a longtime resident of Sherwood Drive, where she shared a joyful life with her husband, Joseph Truitt, Jr., who predeceased her in 2020. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a master's degree in English and a noted Melville scholar, Lorraine's love of literature shaped a distinguished teaching career. From the late 1960s through 2001, she inspired generations of students as a respected instructor of Junior and Senior English honors, later leading the English as a Second Language program with grace and compassion. Lorraine was known for her golden hair, sparkling blue eyes, lilting voice, and timeless sense of humor. Her thoughtful questions and attentive presence made others feel truly seen and heard. In retirement, she continued to enrich the lives of those around her through quiet generosity, deep empathy, and enduring warmth. She is survived by her twin sister Lydia Holsten, sons, Joseph, III (Nadine) and Greg, and her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Benjamin, Jonathan, and Adrienne Truitt. Lorraine's legacy of intellect, kindness, and strength will be remembered with love by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Lorie was a client at the salon I work at, and I had the pleasure of being able to chat with her over the years. I always looked forward to her coming in. The sweetest, most kind hearted, caring woman I have met. Always made you feel special, really listened to you and cared about what you had to say. Always a lovely & genuine conversation. I will miss her and our chats. A beautiful woman inside and out! RIP Lorie

It's hard to grasp that Lorie is gone. She inspired generations of Cherry Hill West students. I was one of the lucky recipients of her kindness, love and support. Indeed, I´m grateful to have had her as a mentor and cherished friend for over 55 years. Her loving notes, sweet texts and occasional visits were a great source of sustenance to me. As teachers, she and her husband Joe impacted my life in countless ways. They are why I love novels and poetry and turn to them often for comfort and inspiration. They were my role models for teaching with passion, kindness, commitment and deep respect for my students. Lorie and Joe will remain in my heart, always. Sending my deepest condolences to the Haas/Truitt families.

These two! Their marriage was a thing of beauty. And of course, their generosity of spirit. Loving, giving, so bright and so full of fun and laughter. They shone their light, and it lit something inside of you to be your best without any judgment. I can't imagine my life now, not speaking with her, but she was ready to go home, I think, and see her beloved Joe.

Then as Miss Haas, I was fortunate to be in her American Literature class my junior year at Cherry Hill West (1971-72). She was so inspiring! I have often thought of her over the many years since and extend condolences to her family and friends.

Mrs. Truth made us memorize this Shakespearean "sonnet".
I can still recite the whole piece 50+ years later!
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our Yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death out out brief candle life is but a walking shadow a poor player that struts and frets his our upon the stage and is heard no more It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Without a doubt, Lorie was the gentlest and kindest soul I have ever met. I went to see her a few times after Joe passed away, and she was always gracious and grateful for my visits. We have lost a marvelous human being and a caring teacher.

Lori was one of the kindest people I've ever had the privilege of knowing, kindness that asked nothing in return. In the y ears that I was directing theater at West, Lori attended most of the shows and supported the students who were performing, students who sometimes needed that extra word of praise.

It was quite a shock to have news of Lorie´s passing pop up on my phone today. Of course we knew this was coming but so hard to lose this dear sweet friend. I loved her so much. Lorie and Joe lived next door to me in Sherwood Forest in Medford for over 24 years!! I have always said they were truly a blessing having them as close neighbors. I have so many special loving memories of Lorie and I will miss her very much. I´m so grateful that I shared another wonderful visit with her end of June. So emotional but lovely too. Lorie has always been the kindest, sweetest, most loving woman and it hurts knowing I won´t see her again. But I smile when I picture her running into her Joe´s open arms. Rest in Peace my special friend

A beautiful lady always, exceeded only by her smile, kindness and humanism. She has been missed and will continue to be missed by her friends and family as we share memories. I loved my relationship with Lori as a friend, teacher, confidant, educator, and sweet person and dearest wife of Joe.

I had the privilege of being one of Mrs. Truitt´s ESL students at Cherry Hill West HS after moving from Italy in 1996. I don´t know what I would have done without her patience, kindness and her teachings. Thanks to her class I was quickly able to join regular English class, eventually moving to A-level where literature and writing became my passion. I graduated with an English BA from St. Joe´s. I don´t think any of it would have been possible without her. The news of her passing is heartbreaking but I feel so lucky to have crossed her path at such a critical point in my life.
Thank you for everything, Mrs. Truitt. I´ll remember you forever.
