Ten years? The pain of loss is buried deeper but is no less intense. Against the ever-dark foreboding of a truncated life, you brought the bright light of joy, which still peeks through. You are with us every day.

I have just learned about lucy, an entire year later, and it's hard not to cry. She was the brightest girl in highschool and my GOD did I have a crush since then.. I've been away a while, and I got curious:. She was the bravest and most upbeat girl I've ever met, even through this terrible disease... Why do the best ones leave us?!

Dear Shelley, Michael and Micah,
You are loved. So sorry to learn today of Lucy's passing.
It is overwhelming to lose one child, and we share that sadness. Understanding that Lucy has joined Susannah does not, as parents and brother, offer comfort, at least now.
Gaping holes in our hearts take the shape of our dearly departed loved ones. The outlines stay with for a reason.
I have long admired your deep love, support and affection for your children.
I wish I had a way to ease your pain at this time.

Shelley, Micah, and I thank all who have shared their memories of Lucy. She lit up our lives for 29 years, and we must now pass through a world without light for a period until we rediscover the permanent glow Lucy left behind. It has been a comfort to learn how many lives Lucy profoundly affected and how many loved her so deeply. We miss her terribly.

I remember when I first met Lucy, with what ease and warmth she welcomed me into her life - how freely I could talk with her and how fun it was just being around her. Sifting through my memories of Lucy, I'm hard-pressed to find one where she isn't smiling, or laughing, or dancing, or singing. One of my favorites is a time she sang for me, stifling so much laughter, a perfect rendition of Marilyn Monroe's 'Happy Birthday, Mr. Kennedy', with my name awkwardly spliced in. I feel so lucky to have had Lucy as a friend, and to have seen her live so fully, unabashedly, and courageously. Lucy was such a loving, spirited person, who is in turn so loved and will be so missed by everybody whose lives she touched. My heart aches for Lucy, and I cherish the time I had with her.
My deepest condolences to her family, keeping you in my thoughts and heart today in this difficult time.

The night I received news of Lucy passing, I was part of a phone tree that spanned the continent and over 6 years of Marlboro graduates. I think that, in lieu of the space or ability to share what she really meant to me, that single fact is a shining beacon of her laughter, her friendship, and her unbreakable will to live every day to the fullest potential. She united us. On a smaller scale, she was the grounding force for years in our corps of photographers; never afraid to reach and explore new ideas, never afraid to admit when those ideas weren't working, never afraid to unabashedly move on to something else.
Her love of life was a mooring post for me when I was in my darkest hour, and kept me from drifting too far to sea. In death, as in life, she is keeping the people around her aware of how fortunate we are to have each other.
She made us better.
I will miss her deeply and forever.
I love you, Lucy. We all do.

I never taught Lucy at Marlboro, but I knew her pretty well, and I can't dredge up a single memory of her in which she is not laughing. Good days and bad days -- she seemed to take them all in stride, and she lived with such obvious and infectious joy. She left me better than she found me. All my memories are of her today, and all my prayers with the family. I'm terribly, terribly sorry for your loss.
