It is difficult to believe that it has been ten years since Max's death. I considered him a good friend. We had studying/testing for AVDC in common. I always enjoyed his friendship. We often walked the early morning fun run at the Forum together. I miss you Max!

Dr Herman visited the practice I work at in the 90's to teach us dentistry techniques. He brought us into the modern world with new equipment and his patient teachings. I really enjoyed working with him and all of his stories and knowledge. I don't know where he got all of his energy but it served him well. I think of him often and fondly. I just heard of his passing and want to offer my sympathies to his loved ones. He will be missed.

It has been my pleasure to catch up with Max over the past decade or more at the annual Vet Dentistry Forums.
I especially remember that prior to last last years forum I spent the day with Max and his wife touring the city of Seattle. It was a most memorable outing.
Max was always friendly and helpful and I truly regret his passing

I'm very saddened to learn of Max's passing. I've known him since the late 90's and recall when he finally passed the dental boards. I spent many days at his dental clinic while I was tracking on the alternate pathway. I have many fond memories of my time with Max, working on dental cases. His accumulated dental library which he used while studying for the boards was quite extensive. He was always available, eager and willing to spend time with me and help me out. He designed my dental operatory and together we built it. I sent him home with some supplies for the Veterinary Museum he was working on. I last saw Max and Judy at the Boston Forum. Max was truely blessed from his first wife Peg, a wonderful person, to his children Mike, Tim, & Linda, to his current wife Judy. My deepest condolences to the family he leaves behind. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

I was privileged to call Dr. Max Herman friend and colleague. We studied veterinary dentistry together, roomed together at meetings, and shared our passion for dentistry. I got to know him as a friend....he told me of his life and the good and the bad. He made it to the highest level of oral care; Diplomate of the AVDC. I salute you once more tonight my friend. You and I had a "hell of a journey" together. Tonight your journey brings you the greatest peace. You will be missed.

I as well am saddened by the loss of dear Max.
During my early years at Penn, Max attended every CE
course we provided. I remember fondly several trips
to the zoo to care for the dental needs of exotic animals.
HIs enthusiasm was infectious, his kindness to a newcomer
was always appreciated.
Over the years I always looked forward to seeing Max at the Dental
Forum meetings . He will be greatly missed as a colleague and
a friend.
My sincerest condolences to his family.

Dear AVDC Colleagues:
I regret to inform you that Max Herman died yesterday.
I have no details about services etc, but will pass them on to all diplomates as soon as I have them.
Max had been in general practice for many years when he caught the dental bug, but he enthusiastically undertook all of the challenges inherent in becoming an AVDC Diplomate from practice, and passed the AVDC examination in 1998. He continued to be active until recently, visiting practices to design dental service areas and train staff.
His home address is 151 Lattice Lane, Collegeville, PA 19426.

That's too bad, he was a great guy.
I can remember him visiting our office for a week. Every day he brought some goodies for the staff - they loved him!

Terribly sad news. I first met him at the exam in Houston and he was a very calming influence round the dinner table with fine stories to tell of practice days past.

I appreciate Max!
Intelligent and great humor.

I often tell people how Max took his 1st run at the board exam at 65, so age is no excuse to stop learning or moving forward. He was a super fellow and will be missed.
Fraser (Hale)
Max was such a happy person who always had a smile:)
He will be missed:(
Barron (Hall)
Max was a great man. We went through training together and he was always a positive influence with a contagious smile. Max and I both loved our Manhattan cocktails, but Max would order them "up" with a glass of rocks on the side. He taught me that you got a free few ounces of drink that way. Just the other night, I was brought a Manhattan with no ice (not what I ordered!). I asked the waiter for a glass of rocks, and told my wife "That's a Max Herman!"
Max will be missed!

I always enjoyed visiting with Max. He always had a positive, conscientious attitude, a great smile, and kind words for everybody. I'll miss him.

Such sad news. I second what Barron had to say. Such a happy guy! I have lots of happy memories of meeting up with Max and his wife at the Dental Forum year after year.
When I think of Max I think of a great big smile ?
Bonnie (Shope)
This makes me so sad! I met (bonded) with Max at the UPenn courses that Colin & Peter gave in the '80s. We continued training together for many years. I enjoyed his company at the Forums and emails. This is hard. I will miss Max's enthusiastic spirit!

Max was a tremendous inspiration to me because he was the elder statesman --------the oldest to pass the AVDC exam -------and I sought his advice as I followed in his steps.

I first met Max at the Forum in Albuquerque many years ago. We walked a few blocks and had dinner. He was so positive and encouraging for moving forward with the alternate pathway program and was proud he was the oldest to take the exam!
It was SO good to see him at this past forum in Seattle after missing him the year before. As others have said, always a smile on his face!
Rest in Peace Max, you will be missed!

Max helped me to become a diplomate by alerting me when he scheduled an active ortho case at his clinic so I could be there to see the case.
Max had a love not only of veterinary dentistry, but of all things related to veterinary medicine.
All around good guy, will be missed!

I knew Max as a real nice guy .Always friendly and he smiled a lot

Very sad news to hear of the death of Max Herman. He was a great honorable man and I will certainly miss him.
When he passed the AVDC boards back in 1998, I gave him "Congrats", shook his hand, gave him a big hug at the Dental Forum and was very happy to give him the title that I carried for one year --- Oldest person to pass the AVDC exam --- at the "Sweet age of 55".
I think Max was 65 or 66 that year that he passed the AVDC exam. He beat me by 10 years. We would talk about it at several of the Forum meetings as well as the museum that he founded to preserve articles of Veterinary Medicine there in Pennsylvania.
When visiting with him, he would have you smiling and happy in just a few minutes as he was talking about old times and old stories. He had a very good "attitude on life" and I know he will be another one of our leaders in Heaven.
Beverly and I will miss him for awhile, but we will join him later and have a chat about the preservation of Veterinary Medicine and the different Dental items in the museums up there in GODS country.
We ALL miss you Max --- take care up there --- see you later "Brother of the Tooth".
(Ken Capron)
Like Laura and Dan, I met Max at Peter and Colin's course at Penn. We became friends and ended up studying for the exam together. I always told him he was "my hero" because he passed the exam when he was in his late 60's, then for many years afterward you would see his smiling face, bright and early, at the Forum Fun Run/Walk. He was always young at heart.
You will be missed, Max! Rest in Peace.
Bill (Gengler)
How sad! I met Max during my residency at Penn - our encounters at the Dental Forum throughout the years were always a great pleasure! I have enormous respect for somebody who went through the ordeal of a College examination at his age. However, what impressed me the most was his wonderful disposition and the great respect that he showed for a young (youngish!) resident - at the time it was almost shocking for me!
He will certainly be missed!
Marghe (Gracis)
I stopped to see Max a week before he took the exam. I recall he had all of his equipment laid out on a table. He pointed everything out to me, showing me what equipment he was taking. He, Jack Noyes, and I used to hang out together every year at the meeting. He will be missed. Such a kind man.
Larry Baker
I once was lecturing in Pennsylvania and Max invited me to visit the Veterinary Museum he had helped establish. It was an amazing collection of veterinary history and memorabilia. Dr. Emily and others had sent some great dental equipment that was on display. He was so proud of those contributions, as he should be. He was so generous. He gave me one of the original program brochures from the very first Veterinary Dental Forum which I have and cherish. What a great ambassador for our profession. He will be missed.

"Some people see the future as it might be others cant see beyond today"
I remember Max telling that it was quite an experience for him to take the board exam, as the previous time he had sat an exam had been in 1954.
There are so many great individuals in our AVDC family, and Max was certainly one if the greatest.
With respect,

Max was such a great guy, he used to help me out when I did the Scrub sales. I visited him and saw his early start at the dental museum. I will miss him

I am not sure that my other email made it through the cyberspace. I always enjoyed seeing Max, and his wife, at the forum. I even visited them and saw Max's veterinary museum that he had started. I will miss him
Ruth (Barthel)
I saw Max at last years AVMA meeting and we chatted about life. He wanted to learn more and keep up to date on veterinary medicine and dentistry until he passed on. We all should strive for this enthusiasm and quest for knowledge.
Max will be remembered.
Gary (Goldstein)
I had seen Max around at the dental forums but never really knew who he was or had never spent time talking to him until a few years ago and I can't remember how it started… (old age settling in I guess), I think it was Judy who came up to me at the forum in Minneapolis and said after the president's reception that she would like to be involved in “catering” the next pres reception should that happen. So I got introduced to Max then and spent some time talking to him. He was a lovely man and always had a big welcoming smile on his face. He seemed like such a gentle person and one that would accept you and receive you anytime. I recall hosting the endo 1 lab at one of the forums and desperately seeking help as I had wanted someone that could help the students at each table. Poor Max, happened to be wondering around the halls and I grabbed him and brought him into the lab- protesting but coming. I was so happy to have him there and thought what a privilege it was for all the students and the rest of we educators to have him amoungst us. He helped out and had the best disposition.
Well it worked out that Judy and I put our heads together to work out the food and drink for the president's reception the year that Bill handed over the gavel. Guess who we pulled in to help us but poor Max. He came up to the room, put on his chef's assistant hat- assistant to Judy that is, his apron, and away we went to prepare food for all that would be expected to come to the reception that weekend. Once again, he was willing and had that lovely smile and demeanor about him- imagine being bossed by 2 women!! Never once did he show anything but his kind, gentle, accommodating way.
I have always looked forward to going to the forums to “get caught up” with my diplomate friends, and Max and Judy were ones I would seek out and hope to be able to talk with. A few years ago Max's health declined and he and Judy were unable to make the forum- two years in a row I believe it was, so sad to not have him there to kibitz with. When he was there last year, I was so happy to see he and Judy once again and was thinking that perhaps he was regaining his health.
I am so sorry to have lost this gentle man from our group- for our group, for me, and for his wonderful wife Judy and their family. I believe he touched many of us with his quiet, kind and gentle manner, with his determination to be part of this group, and with his contribution in the veterinary dental museum.
Judy, I loved our interactions and I will sorely miss seeing you both at the forums. May God be with you at this difficult time, and may you know that Max has impacted many lives and that he will be sorely missed by us all. Colleen O'Morrow [email protected]
Max often called to discuss a case or refer it to PennVet. “Hi Alex, it's Max Herman.” I never forget his soft and kind voice! He always informed us when he had a malocclusion patient so that our residents could visit and observe him performing an active orthodontic treatment in order to count the case in their logs. I once told Max about the creative project the third-year students have to do at the end of our elective didactic lecture course each spring and sort of complained about the mountain of projects that had accumulated over the years in my office. He suggested bringing them to his museum for display. My girlfriend, a friend of ours, and I drove to the American Museum of Veterinary Medicine in Birdsboro, PA, and we handed over dozens of posters, booklets, games, and other materials that veterinary students made. Max gave us a special tour through the museum. We felt very grateful for having made the trip. It was a wonderful day! It has always been good seeing him at the Veterinary Dental Forum and to have a chat with him. Kindness and great humor best describe him. We will miss him!

It was with great sadness to hear about the passing of Max. He epitomized the word "Gentleman". He loved Veterinary Medicine and contributed in so many ways.
He was a man who loved what he did and did what he loved. We have known Max since 1972. We have traveled the world with Max, first with Peggy and then with Judy. He enjoyed every minute during his travels. Attached is just one image of Max in Ecuador during his trip to the Galapagos.
