Michael J. Kane Obituary

Kane Michael J. Michael J. Kane was an advocate for justice and public service his entire career and it is with great sadness that his family announces his death on Friday, March 8, 2024. Mike fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, and died a very peaceful death at home in Doylestown, in the presence of his wife and beloved cat, Mouse, who stood watch at his bedside. His children and grandchildren surrounded him with love. Mike graduated from New Hope Solebury High School in 1961, and began his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1965. After a gap year, he attended Duke University School of Law when the civil rights movement was raging. Mike took great honor from having worked for these issues of equality during his time at Duke. He registered voters and was arrested for being in the "wrong" laundromat. He graduated in 1969, was Editor of the Law Review, and a member of the Order of the Coif, a legal honor society. Mike's first legal job was serving as a law clerk for the Honorable Francis Van Dusen, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Following his time clerking, he joined the Bucks County, PA District Attorney's Office under then D.A. Ward Clark. Mike would continue to serve as assistant, deputy, chief deputy, and Chief of Prosecution under Mr. Clark and Kenneth Biehn. Mike was appointed in 1979 as Interim D.A. by the county judges, and ran and won the race for D.A. in 1981. Subsequently, he was elected judge of the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas in 1985, where he served 20 years before retiring effective Jan. 6, 2006. Mike is survived by his wife, Christine Boyd, whom he married in 2005. He was predeceased by his son, Richard, and is survived by his daughters, Christina Kane (William Maeglin) and Jennifer Kane (Boris Zabolotskiy), and Christina and William's three children, Otto (23), Harold (21), and Joseph (18). He is also survived by Christine's daughter, Erin Boyd and her three children, Roland (16), Zoe (13) and Max (9) Shaffer; Mike's sister, Susan Kane; and brother, Peter Kane (Kate) and their children, Nina Kane (Patrick Holt), Cara Kane (Christian Raffensperger), and Cara and Christian's children. Mike loved growing herbs and tomatoes, cooking, traveling, reading and talking about politics, and fishing. One of his proudest accomplishments was winning the Long Beach Island Striped Bass Derby in 2009, with a 42 ½ pound striped bass. Mike and Christine traveled extensively, on their own and with the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), of which Christine is a member. A reception honoring a life well lived is scheduled for April 6, 2024 at Slate Bleu Restaurant, 100 S. Main Street, Doylestown, PA, from 4:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. All friends and family are invited. Judge Mike - I ALWAYS called him "Judge" because he SO earned this regardless of his incessant "call me Mike for lord sake" - was as good a Judge, a person, a friend, and as gracious and kind as one could imagine. They came no better. Your smile is indelible in our hearts.

To Chris and everyone - please know that Mike exemplified a life well lived in EVERY way. Your unspeakable loss is God's game. Judge Mike - thank you for showing so many of us by your example how to live, laugh and love. You will always be part of all of us
All my love, forever,
Bill Ricci
