SELMA DUBROW Obituary

DUBROW SELMA (nee BOOSE) Age 91, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2021. Selma taught English for 32 years, the last 25 at George Washington High School, influencing and inspiring hordes of students who continued to express their appreciation well after her retirement. She won the Rose Lindenbaum Teacher of the Year Award in May 1982. Selma was also a class sponsor and director, as well as an actress in local theatre. Following retirement, Selma and her husband, Bernie, performed for organizations, apartment complexes, and retirement communities. Selma and Bernie traveled extensively, but their favorite destination was Israel, beginning in August 1967, months after the Six Day War. They later spent a six month sabbatical in Israel. Selma is survived by her children Cheryl (Dr. Steven) Nadler and Kenneth (Laura) Dubrow, Esq., her grandchildren Dayna (Josh) Hafetz, Dr. David (Carla) Nadler, Samantha Dubrow, and Scott Dubrow, and her 5 great grandchildren, Chelsea Hafetz, Chase Hafetz, Tyler Nadler, Blake Nadler, and Devyn Nadler. Contributions in her memory may be made to Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Rd., Phila., PA 19115. A private Funeral will be held on February 14, 2021. www.goldsteinsfuneral.com

Mrs. Dubrow was my 7th grade English teacher at GWHS in 1964.
She was a very good teacher. She taught us proper english, like how
to say ," Coupon and not Qoupon".

I just found this out; Mrs Dubrow was our class sponsor (79) and she was a classy woman and very caring. She was largely responsible for me getting my act together my last two years at GWHS and graduating with decent grades. God bless her family and her memory.

In 1972 we did an all faculty cast of the comedy, "Solid Gold Cadillac". Selma had a staring role. I, as a senior, was on the stage crew, but had to fill in for a part not casted. I had to change from by back stage clothes to o. Stage clothes. I chose the room closest to change in. So happened Selma was going to use that room. The comedy was not only on stage but back stage also.
Selma and her husband Bernie, wete family friends and their loss was particularly difficult for me. I am so glad they are together again.

I remember Mrs. Dubrow so fondly! I was a student in her summer Shakespeare camp from 1991-1996 at Holy Family. She cast me in the roles of Macbeth, Ophelia, the ghost in “Hamlet,” Casca, and MacDuff. I am proud to say that I was probably the only eight-year old Macbeth in the world in 1991. Mrs. Dubrow inspired me to value literature and the performing arts. I recently finished a Ph.D. in German literature. My research partly involved learning about the famous Shakespeare revival in eighteenth-century Germany. I thought about her often with appreciation during the research process.

My condolences to all who love and will miss the world's best English teacher. I never knew her outside of the classroom, but for that experience, I am immeasurably grateful. Throughout my college years and teaching career, she was never far from my thoughts.

GWHS ‘84 - Mrs Dubrow was my 11th grade English teacher. She made the classics come alive with her dramatic flare. She was a demanding teacher and mentor who brought out the best in us. One has some many teachers along their educational journey but few leave as much an impression or collection of recallable memories as Mrs Dubrow. I also had the pleasure of being directed by Mrs. Dubrow in GWHS’s theater productions of Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum. I can hear her repeatedly directing us how to adequately project our voices as she sat in the back row of the auditorium and her instructions to animate and exaggerate for our group of novice thespians. RIP Mrs Dubrow. You touched many and are fondly remembered.

Hands down the best, most influential teacher I ever had in the Philadelphia school system (or ever!). She influenced me in too many ways to list here; suffice it to say if I had not had her English class I would not be the person I am today, and that is the greatest gift a teacher can give. I was delighted to reestablish contact with her a few years back (shortly after her husband passed) and we talked for a while. She was still active then. She was always active, a force of nature.

RIP, Aunt Selma. Will miss you!

Mrs. Dubrow was my English teacher and Class Sponsor (1972). I am so glad to know that she lived a long and happy life, as I am sure she touched and shaped the hearts and minds of many students. I remember her as full of energy and warmth, and her smile was as big as her personality. She was an excellent teacher. I've kept her image in my head over the years, as I have occasionally looked at my yearbook. She looks as beautiful in the photo on this page as she always did. May her memory be a blessing.

An excellent teacher that I remember from Woodrow Wilson Junior High sixty years ago. Selma also directed me in the school's Dramatics Club production where I played a hillbilly and strummed a guitar on stage. I'm pleased to see that she had a good life. Deepest sympathy to her family.

Mrs. Dubrow was my class sponsor for GWHS graduating class of 1972. She gave her energy freely directed from her big caring heart. Her encouragement, grace and enthusiasm for life gave me confidence as a shy teen.

You never know where your kind words will fall and how impactful they will be. Hers flowed liked a rushing stream out in many directions for all her students.

Thank you family for sharing her with us. I send my sincere condolences. May her good name be for a blessing.

Selma was a great influence both in and out of GWHS. She was not my teacher, but I learned much from her. I was fortunate to know her and Bernie in social settings as they were family friends. May her memory give solace to her family in the days to come.

Just wanted to offer my condolences to the Nadler and Dubrow family on the passing of your beloved mother, Selma. I flashed back about 60 years ago. I had to sell candy for the Cub Scouts Blue and Gold Dinner and was walking door to door in Pine Valley and that wasn’t easy for a nine year old. Your mother kindly bailed me out by purchasing a can of Almond Rocca, my biggest sale of the day. Just a small gesture but one that stays with you after 60 years. May her memory be a blessing and sustain you and your family.
Regards,

Cheryl and Steve, I’m saddened to hear about your Mom. What a wonderful teacher and person she was! She stood out in such a good way in how she made class interesting and inspired us to learn. Sometimes, when I’m not sure if I’m phrasing something correctly, a vision of her immediately comes to mind, hoping I could get her approval. I crossed paths with her and your Dad years ago and it was such a thrill. May she Rest in Peace, knowing that she truly left her mark on so many people and may her memory be a blessing to your family and all who were privileged to know her.

Member of GWHS class o 1979. Mrs Dubrow was my class sponsor and english teacher. She was a smart funny lady and she made me like Shakespeare. I have remembered all these years, which proves how good a teacher she was. My sympathies to her family. She was one of a kind.

I haven't seen Mrs Dubrow in 50 years, but I still remember her English class fondly. What a distinguished, classy, yet down to Earth inspiration to all of her students. She was my favorite and encouraged me to give my best. Rick Wrigley Student

Mrs. Dubrow was one of the best, if not the best teacher I’ve ever had. I saw her later in life at my grandfather’s funeral and she gave me a thumbs up for my eulogy. It was like getting an A in her class (which I never did)! RIP.

Many Teachers try to mold the minds of their students to think their way. Mrs. Dubrow's philosophy was to help you think Your way, respecting your individuality and dignity. She lived her life the same way and treated everyone the way she wanted to be treated. She was committed to her culture, family and friends. Deepest Condolences to Her Family, Friends, Academians and Students

Selma wasn’t one of my teachers but she was the sponsor for the Class of 1979. In that role she attended all our class gatherings including our prom at Emerald City, a short lived teen disco in Cherry Hill, NJ. I crossed paths with her as an adult on a corporate team building session many years ago. She and her husband did a comical presentation that really had the attendees’ attention. Afterwards I went up to say hi and tell her I was one of her 1979 alums. She was very gracious and we spoke for several minutes. May her memory be forever a blessing to her family.

Selma was a shining star in my life. She was my 8th grade English teacher at GWHS, but she taught me so much more than literature, grammar, and writing. She was my inspiration whose lessons in grace, humor, and humanity carried me through my own teaching career, and through my life. Her memory lives on as a blessing in so many lives. She touched our world and made it better. May she
Rest In Peace, and may her family find comfort knowing how very much she was loved and admired.
