I have a photo of you and I, arm in arm, sweated from the field of play.
Our faces streaked with dirt but filled with joy, for it was a very good day.
We are two friends who met long ago, and maintained volumes to discuss,
Through all the years our common ground was that the race was never run between us.
We stepped together, you and I, in the rain and in the sun,
And I refuse to accept, in this life or the next, that we are anywhere near being done.
Tom, my grief overwhelms me now.
I look forward to the day when I see you again.
