Tristan Gioia Hughes

1990 - 2023

Hughes Tristan Gioia Of Narberth, PA, died at home on January 4, 2023. He was 32. He is the beloved son of Samuel Hughes and Patrice Raccio Hughes, and the brother of Jesse Hughes, all of Narberth. He also leaves many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Born August 26, 1990, in Philadelphia, Tristan attended Lower Merion schools and graduated from Lower Merion High School in 2009. He developed a passion for the outdoors at an early age, and spent many years involved with the Student Conservation Association, with roles from high school crew member to paid intern to crew leader, his travels taking him around the continental states and Alaska. When he decided to switch gears to pursue his interest in cooking, he moved to New Orleans and talked his way into the kitchen of a Garden District restaurant, later he parlayed that into a line cook job at one of his favorite French Quarter cafes. He moved to California in 2014, first taking two jobs through Worldwide Opportunities in Organic Farming (WWOOF), then becoming an organic cannabis grower in Humboldt County. He moved back East at the end of 2021, and was until his death a cook at Feast Your Eyes Catering in Philadelphia. "We loved working with Tristan," said his employer, Lynn Buono. "He was a hard worker, clever and picked up tasks easily, but above all he was kind to everyone, no matter their station in life. He was universally liked, which isn't always the case in drama-filled kitchens." Donations may be made to the Tristan Hughes Memorial Scholarship at The Student Conservation Association (thesca.org).
