David Cardwell Obituary

David Cardwell was born in Arlington, Virginia, on October 9, 1962, to his beloved mother, Mary Kay Moffit-Cardwell. He grew up in Northern Virginia along with his sister, Carol, and brothers, Ricky and Tom. He became a lifelong fan of the nearby hockey and football teams, the Washington Capitals and Washington Commanders. His man cave, sports memorabilia and numerous jerseys show his passion for these teams. David attended Osbourn High School in Manassas, Virginia, and unbeknownst to him, he met his future wife, Denette (Dee) Perry there.

David and Dee were married on August 23, 2014. They moved to Iowa in 2015 to be closer to her children. Dave was proud to call himself "Papa" to four grandchildren: Lana, Sadie, Prudence, and Noble. Dave spoiled his grandchildren and went above and beyond for them. He owned an array of "Papa" t-shirts announcing to all who came upon him that he was PAPA! He taught the grandbabies a few important lessons:

1. Safety first

2. "Papa!" must be declared with a heavy metal voice

He cooked his grandchildren grits and other southern favorites saying his grandchildren must be introduced to "proper" food.

David will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Dee, stepchildren Jacob and Phoebe Carl, Taylor and Justin Adams, his grandchildren Lana, Sadie, Prudence and Noble, sister Carol Cardwell and brother-in-law Charles Smith, brother and sister-in-law Ricky and Pamela Cardwell, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Susan Cardwell, Aunt Nancy Adams and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Northern Virgina area. Dave had many friends in Virgina and Iowa who will miss his smile and kindness.

There are two Celebrations of Life planned. The first celebration will be held at Craftworx Taproom on October 13 from noon - 2:00 pm in Gainesville, Virginia. The second celebration will be held at Checkers Tavern on October 26 from 2:00 -4:00 pm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Iowa Donor Network.

Tom & Susan Cardwell Brother and Sister in Law

October 2, 2024

Growing up he was always my youngest brother, I now have a big open space in our heart he had turned his life around after finding his love of his life. This comes as the worst time of his life and he will always be missed here on Earth but we know he is now in Gods house where he will rest his weary bones... Tom & Susan Cardwell
