Emily Moore Obituary

Emily (Emy) Olivia Moore departed from her earthly body on Friday morning, March 21, 2025. Her three daughters held her hands, whispering love and poetry in her ears as she transitioned. Emy shared a deep and unique bond with each of her daughters; she was their guiding compass. While the girls will miss the daily phone calls and cherished time spent together, the abundance of memories and gratitude for this remarkable woman and incredible mother will serve as their guiding light and the wind beneath the wings she nurtured so lovingly.

Born in Livermore, Maine, on March 24, 1941, Emy was the daughter of Hildred Mabel Thompson, an educator, and Wendell E. Moore, a businessman. She was one of six siblings, all of whom helped tend to their father's apple orchards and chicken farms. Emy often accompanied her father to nearby towns to sell apples and fresh eggs, mirroring his outgoing personality. Little did she know that these adventures with Wendell were sharpening her sales skills. Her childhood was filled with memories of running through fields, swimming in brooks and rivers, and cozying up near the woodstove during winter. Emy had countless stories to share and always appreciated a willing listener.

In 1959, Emy was swept off her feet by a charming race car driver named Ronald A. Smith. They married (twice!) and throughout their marriage, Emy was a talented cook, crafter and seamstress, creating clothing, drapes and various other items. She also wrote and published programs for Oxford Plains Speedway, where Ronnie raced stock cars. However, she was not without mischief; once, when justifiably upset with her husband, she brought a green blanket to the races, knowing it was considered bad luck. As fate would have it, Ronnie lost the race-a rare occurrence! Stylish, popular, and attractive, Emy and Ronnie were akin to the "Brad and Angelina" of the 1960s racing circuit. Their lives were filled with excitement and shenanigans in the pits and at post-race parties, embodying the essence of life in the fast lane long before The Eagles came into existence.

Yet, Emy and Ronnie's story was not solely about a need for speed; they also welcomed three daughters: Veronika (1961), Merilee (1967) and Stacey-Ford (1973). The couple lived in Farmington and Wilton, Maine, where their daughters graduated from Mt. Blue High School. While raising her family, Emy worked for the telephone company, ran her own businesses in interior decorating and hardwood transportation, and became one of the first female car salespersons in New England. In her twenties, she was a member of The Young Republicans in Maine, but in recent years, she leaned left in pursuit of facts and integrity. Emy was also a proud, lifelong member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Emy remained close to her five siblings throughout her life, and in 1993, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her two older brothers. Reinventing herself yet again, Emy studied cosmetology at Graham Webb in Arlington, Virginia, and after graduating, managed two local salons. As much as she enjoyed coiffing hair and chatting with her clients, she'd always had a passion for real estate. Thus, in 2002, she procured her real estate license. This was her best career move as she loved helping people buy and sell homes and did so until 2024.

Emy also enjoyed traveling with family and friends and she felt blessed to have visited Nova Scotia, England, Mexico, Florida, Texas, California, Hawaii, and her favorite, Barbados. The latter for an unforgettable celebration of her 70th birthday.

Although proud of her professional accomplishments, family and friends were far more important to Emy than any degree or certificate. Many of her childhood friendships endured and she made a bevy of new friends here in Virginia. Her friends always knew she cared. She would lose sleep if someone close to her was suffering in any way. The next day she would call them or offer to spend time with them. In Maine, her door was open to everyone, and the coffee was always 'on' in her kitchen. Many a niece, nephew, neighbor, and friend bared their soul in that room where they knew they were loved, unconditionally.

Thanks to her youthful spirit, excellent fashion sense, and her allowance of certain breakfast cereals like Captain Crunch and Lucky Charms, Emy earned the nickname "The Cool Mom" from her daughters' childhood friends. Her beauty was often admired by men of all ages, and she enjoyed spending time with them. When it was recently revealed that her daughters' male high school friends thought Emy was "hot," she beamed with delight! Honestly, when her hair was still chestnut brown, she resembled a young Ali MacGraw from "Love Story" and had the stunning complexion of Elizabeth Taylor. Her dear friends and neighbors, the Soucy family, often referred to Emy as a movie star, and they were not exaggerating.

Antiquing, estate sales, restoring old houses, and interior decorating were among Emy's favorite pastimes, but she was happiest when she could spend time with her children. Music, singing, poetry, fashion, redecorating, friends, and the relentless teasing that goes with having a big family were the golden threads that wove the fabric of her life together.

Emy often sang in the morning, a memory her daughters will cherish. She was witty, funny, and bossy, but the essence of Emy was love. She always managed to make others feel special and valued as individuals. Hence her very long list of close friends, both male and female. There were many important saviors in Emy's fabulous life.

Clearly, her immediate family are just a few of the many who will miss her every single day. They include daughter Veronika and husband Jeffrey (Washington, Va.), daughter Stacey-Ford Pope and husband Jeff (Strasburg, Va.), daughter Merilee Smith and partner Mike Skurka (New Gloucester, Maine), as well as two granddaughters, Vivian and Jocelyn Pope (Strasburg, Va.). Emy's younger brother David and wife Patricia reside in Livermore, Maine. A sister-in-law, Wanda Moore, resides in Warrenton, Va., and other siblings (Tom, Mabel, Frank, and Manton) passed on before Emily.

If you care to make a donation in Emily's honor, may we suggest the Washington Fire and Rescue Squad. Their kindness and professionalism helped her on several occasions.

I was so sad to hear Emmy had passed. She was such a wonderful friend when I lived in Maine 1989-1990. We kept in touch and I saw her when I was in DC and when she visited FL. Unfortunately, the only contact for the last decade or more was by telephone and Christmas cards. She was a "spitfire" and full of love and kindness. I will miss her

So many fond memories of hanging out in Veronika & Jeff´s kitchen visiting and laughing with Emily. And she was such a staunch supporter of local charities and supported the youth of the county. Will miss her smile, warmth, and laughter. Much love to your family.

Members of your Lovejoy family have so many cherished memories of time spent with your mom, dad the three of you and your mom's family. So thankful for the bond that we shared. Your mom was so special. I would have thought that it would be impossible to sum up her life, her accomplishments and her huge personality in an obituary, but you did it. It is the most beautiful and perfect tribute I have ever read. Til we meet again, Em. I know you'll have the coffee brewing and I'll bring the Sara Lee Cheesecake.

Emily was a close friend for the last several years. I'd call her and say "Can you come out and play?" and off we'd go - shopping, lunch, more shopping, talking about out kids, laughing about our many mis-adventures, pedicures, manicures, and maybe some more shopping! She was always ready for fun! A very special person.
