Frances Groves Obituary
Frances Elizabeth Groves, 88, of Remington, VA, passed away peacefully at home, February 1, 2025, surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers. She was born September 13, 1936 in Amissville, VA, a daughter of the late Armistead Smith and Mable Weakley Hitt.
Fran worked for Fauquier County Public Schools in School Nutrition and Transportation for over 30 years. She was a member of a Warrenton bowling league for many years and loved spending time with her family and friends. Her loving spirit, warm hugs, and generous smile represented exactly who she was. She offered love in abundance. She would like to say, "Take your coat off and stay awhile!", and she meant it.
Not a day went by where you didn't see her with a Bible open at the dining room table or beside her chair. She was the epitome of a Christ-centered and loving wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her genuine love for Jesus shone through each of her relationships in her life, and she would often teach her grandchildren the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23 during her Bible times. Her kindness, grace, and selflessness can only be explained by her true love and joy found in the Lord.
Fran is survived by her children, Crystal Carpenter (Don), Paul Groves (Lisa Ann); step-daughters, Melanie Sullivan (Jeff), and Diane Gulick; grandchildren, Carina Richard-Wheat (Steve), Emily Jacobs (Peter), Amy Fewell (Mark), and Michael Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Ashton Richard (Hannah), Owen Wheat, Mark Fewell III, Chris and Elizabeth Jacobs, Everett Fewell, and Abigail Fewell; sister, Vergie Scott, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Fran was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, John F. Groves; her first husband Otis Hitt, and their daughter, Betty Lou Hitt; step-son, John Michael Groves; three brothers, Silas "Jack" Smith, Charles "Chuck" Smith, and Russell Smith; and two sisters, Rose Wichterman and Alice Tharp.
A special thank you to the amazing, compassionate, and dedicated caregivers who have loved her as a part of their own family for the last few years. We would also like to thank Heidi, her home health nurse, and Trinity Hospice.
Services will be held at Moser Funeral Home on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10am. Visitation will be held from 9am-10am. A private graveside service will be held at a later time for immediate family only.
