John Baumgardner Obituary
John Miles Baumgardner, 71, passed away peacefully at his home, in Stephens City, Virginia, on Sunday, July 23, 2023.
John was born May 23, 1952, son of Fanning Miles and Ruth Kirkwood Baumgardner. He spent much of his early life on the family farm in Washington, Virginia. From an early age, he was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hiking, hunting, and skiing.
In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his son, John Miles Baumgardner, Jr., and his brother, Douglas Kirkwood Baumgardner, of Washington, Virginia
John is survived by three sons, David Kirkwood Baumgardner, Stuart Davis Baumgardner, and Garrett Vogel Baumgardner of Stephens City and three grandchildren, Jackson Miles Baumgardner, Tannen Baumgardner, and Audrey Ann Baumgardner. He is also survived by his sister, Ann H. Baumgardner and sister-in-law, Margaret D. Baumgardner, of Washington, Virginia and many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1970 and received a degree in Civil Engineering from The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1974. He served in the United States Army Reserve. As an engineer (PE), he was employed by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Columbia Gas, and other engineering firms throughout Virginia. John was a talented land surveyor, owning and operating his business, John Baumgardner, PC, Land Planners and Surveyors, in Rappahannock County for many years. He also worked alongside his family in the operation of the family owned Christmas Tree Farm , planting, shearing , and selling trees. John also rebuilt stonewalls on the family farm when not at work.
John is fondly remembered by many for his kindness, his generosity, and his gentle spirit. He was well known for his keen wit, his sense of humor, and his great smile. A devoted son, father, grandfather, and uncle and blessed with an amazing memory, he enjoyed sharing stories with the family of the history of Virginia and especially Rappahannock County history. He was musically gifted and excelled at piano and accordion, entertaining the family on many holiday occasions. Naturally athletic, he enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and following the Washington football and baseball teams.
John was active at Trinity Episcopal Church, confirmed as a young teen, and participating as an acolyte for many years.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 2 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington, Virginia. Following a reception in the parish hall, interment will take place at St. Paul's Cemetery, Woodville, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a local volunteer rescue squad or Trinity Episcopal Church are most appreciated.
