Edward Buresh Obituary

Edward Gregory Buresh Jr., age 82, of Oscoda, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024 at home surrounded by family.
He was born on June 22, 1942 in Detroit, to the late Edward G. Buresh Sr. and Bernadette (Butler) Buresh. Edward Sr. and Bernadette owned and operated Buresh Funeral Homes in the Detroit area and it truly was a family business where all hands were expected to be on deck helping.
Ed began as the third generation in the family business by transporting floral arrangements to and from the five funeral home locations. At the age of 16, his dad entrusted him with the role of assisting with bringing family's loved ones into the funeral home's care from many of the hospitals throughout Detroit. These heavy responsibilities at an early age solidified Ed's character, strength, work ethic and selflessness.
It was also during these years that he met Nan Regina McGreevy (Shude) and it was love at first sight. He held her hand for the very first time when they were 13 years old and from that point forward, he knew that she would be his wife. Ed and Nan married on June 17, 1959 and cherished nearly 65 years of a beautiful life together.
Ed graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and went on to graduate from Wayne State University, obtaining his degree in Mortuary Science. He returned from college to continue working for the family business in Detroit and later relocated his family to Oscoda. Ed and Nan immediately knew that they moved to the right area by the love and warmth they felt from everyone in Oscoda. While acquiring the Dwight Gilbert Funeral Home in Oscoda, Ed owned and operated AuSable Point Home Builders. One of Ed's proudest achievements was serving the community he truly loved.
On June 5, 2024, he was awarded his 60 year licensee award through Michigan Funeral Directors Association. He was an active member of the Lions Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Oscoda and Mackinac Island Yacht Club, among many others.
Ed's love for boating began in his childhood and continued throughout his life. Ed and Nan spent many summers traveling the Great Lakes on their boat, The Nanny. These years of boating brought relaxation from work stress, laughter, joy and friendships into their lives. His love for boating and being on the water also carried over into his passion for Great Lakes fishing.
Ed also spent many years traveling to Saratago, Wyo. with some Oscoda friends to hunt. He truly enjoyed working hard, serving others and living life to the fullest. Ed faced life head on through humor, family, friendships and continuing to "row his boat" each and every day.
Ed is survived by his three sons, Greg (Anna) Buresh, Todd (Shelley) Buresh and Matthew (Alicia) Buresh; grandchildren, Mason, Madison, Katie, Jade, Maddi, Taylor, Franklin, Skye, Kyle and Kevin; and nephews, Jim and Jeff Tryles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nan; sister, Patricia Tryles; brother-in-law, Joseph Tryles; nephews, Joseph Tryles Jr. and John Tryles; and best friend, Jack Landry.
The family will welcome friends on Friday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. until the time of service beginning at noon, at Buresh Funeral Home in Oscoda. The funeral will be livestreamed at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com. He will be laid to rest next to the love of his life and best friend, Nan, in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Oscoda.
Due to his love for the game of hockey, memorial contributions can be directed to the Huron Hockey and Skating Association (Tawas Bay Ice Arena). Ed not only loved being on the open water, but he also loved skating on the frozen water at his family pond hockey rink. One of his proudest memories was playing defense for the Buresh Funeral Home Stompers hockey team. They accomplished winning the Detroit City Championship, the Outdoor State Championship and in 1960, had a deep run in the International Finals held in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

I was saddened to read of both Nan and Ed's passing. They were an amazing couple that truly gave back to the community in so many ways. The obituaries included so many accomplishments for both of them but I wanted to add to it. Both Nan and Ed served on the Development Council of Tawas St. Joseph Hospital and were active in the creation and support of the Development Fund. The funds raised were used to address the growth and development of the hospital. In addition, they were actively involved in physican recruitment. They contributed greatly to the growth of the hospital services. I was blessed and honored to know them. My sincere sympathy and prayers go out to their family. They were so proud of all of you.
