Thomas L. Buresh, born on July 21, 1944, in Lincoln, Nebraska, was the son of Joseph E. and Carrie (Adkins) Buresh. Growing up in McCook, Tom formed lifelong friendships and memories beginning at West Ward Elementary School, alongside his best friend, Daryle Pasquan. His education continued through McCook High School where he proudly achieved perfect attendance. Tom’s dedication to his education continued at McCook Junior College, where he played football. He later graduated from Kearney State College with a degree in business.
Tom honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Tom was united in marriage to Nancy Eifert on June 9, 1972 at St, Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook. They made McCook their lifelong home where Tom ran a successful property casualty agency, Buresh Insurance for many years. He later worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, from where he retired.
A community-oriented individual, Tom played a vital role in establishing the Ed Thomas YMCA in McCook. His dedication extended to the McCook Community Foundation and the McCook Toy Box, enriching the lives of many in his community. As a devoted member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook, he served actively as a vestry member, fostering the congregation’s growth and spirit.
Tom will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality, delightful sense of humor and his passion for sports. He especially enjoyed watching his grandsons compete in athletics beginning with youth sports through college football Saturdays. He was a lifelong McCook Bison fan, a Friday night Phillipsburg Panther fan, a Saturday Husker fan, and Sunday Packers and Chiefs fan. He departed this life on January 15, 2026, at Community Hospital in McCook, at the age of 81.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Buresh.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Buresh of McCook; his son and favorite daughter-in-law, Thomas “Joe” and Amber Buresh of Phillipsburg, Kansas; and his cherished grandsons, Brock and Blake.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at St. Alban Episcopal Church in McCook with Dr. Charles Peek officiating. Inurnment in the St. Alban Episcopal Church Columbarium will follow services. Military honors will take place during services.
Memorial contributions in Tom’s name may be made to the Ed Thomas YMCA in McCook, the McCook Community Foundation, or St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Online condolences can be expressed at herrmannfh.com. The arrangements have been entrusted to Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook.
