James DiLoreto Obituary

James Michael DiLoreto, "the bassman", age 75, played his "one last note" on June 24, 2025.
Born on Feb. 2, 1950 in Detroit, the family moved to Oscoda in 1960. Jim graduated from Oscoda High School and from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He had resided in Greenbush for the last 25 years.
Jim was truly a man of many artistic talents. He was a gifted potter, having an innate knack for the glazing process. His truest artistry was his incredible musical talent playing the stand-up bass. Jim performed with several groups over the course of 50+ years touching every genre of music, from bluegrass to classical and everything in between.
Many will remember him as part of the George Schwedler Trio entertaining at the Oscoda Beach, and a member of Ship W'recked, Sound Waves Big Band and Huron Shores Jazz. For over 20 years, he was part of numerous pits for both Shoreline Players and Tawas Bay Players. Most recently, he performed with the Fusion Trio.
Jim had retired in 2000 after over 20 years as manager of the Harrisville Secretary of State office. His true happiness came from sharing the abundance of his garden and "making music with his friends."
Jim is survived by his sons, Dustin (Kelli) DiLoreto and Jonathan DiLoreto; his granddaughter, London; his sisters, Janet Kuirsky, Joanne (Tom Bagwell) DiLoreto, and Jeanne DiLoreto; several nieces and nephews, and multiple grandnieces and grandnephews; and a plethora of musician friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Josephine (Lysczyk) DiLoreto; and brothers, Joseph and Jerald DiLoreto.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be scheduled later this summer.
In honor of Jim, please make a donation by credit card or check to the Oscoda Area Schools Oscar and Josephine Memorial Scholarship Fund at [email protected] or to the Central Michigan University Jose Luis Maurtua Orchestral Strings Scholarship at www.giving.cmich.edu searching ""Maurtua,"" plant a vegetable to share with your neighbor and tap your foot to a good John Prine tune.

Jim and I were members of the CMU Marching Band in 1967. We got back together again in 2002 when we started working together doing pit orchestras for Tawas Bay Players and Shoreline Players of Oscoda. We were also part of Soundwaves Jazz Orchestra, Jim Sapp´s Shoreline Jazz Ensemble, The Old Time Connection and Fusion Trio. He supplied us with vegetables from his garden every summer for many years. I´ll remember Jim as a really good bass player and a good friend.
I´ll miss him. Rest In Peace my friend.

Jim was a very special person and will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to be his friend. He remembered me with generous amounts of beautiful vegetables from his garden which he also gave to many others. I was fortunate to play music with Jim in various groups and venues over the years. In all that time I never remember Jim being late or unprepared for rehearsals or performances. I will miss you Jim but I know we will one day be reunited on the other side and enjoy the most beautiful music ever.
