Charles Bollin Obituary

Charles Robert Bollin, beloved husband and father, and long time resident of Port Royal Plantation, died Thursday morning surrounded by his family in Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bollin was born in Mayodan, NC. October 22, 1922. He graduated from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA, and from North Carolina State University with a bachelor of science degree in textile management.  He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and participated in the allied invasion of Normandy.  He continued on through Northern France and Germany until the end of the war.  He married his college sweetheart, Elinor May Caddell, of Stony Brook, Long Island, NY and was lovingly devoted to her for 65 years.   Mr. Bollin's career in textile management took him and his family to Augusta, GA with King Mills.  He then joined Celanese Fiber Co. and was located along with his family in Burlington, NC; Toronto, Ontario; Batavia, IL and Rock Hill, SC.  He built the fourth house in Port Royal Plantation in the early 1960s and moved permanently to Hilton Head Island in 1971. An early salesman for the Hilton Head Co., he sold real estate for almost 20 years.  Most recently, he was an owner and business manager of Ellie and Bill's Catering.  Mr. Bollin loved to walk on the Port Royal Beach every morning.  He would take his camera and was an avid photographer and photo collector.  He also was a history buff and enjoyed reading and talking about foreign affairs.  He and Ellie travelled extensively, sometimes to places off the beaten track.   In addition to Ellie, his wife, surviving family members are daughter Joan Bollin Johnston and her husband, James T. "Jim" Johnston, of Atlanta; son William Herman "Bill" Bollin of Hilton Head Island; daughter Anne Vernelle Bollin of Hilton Head Island; daughter Caddell Bollin Czura and her husband, Timothy "Tim" Czura of Bluffton; granddaughters Eleanor Caddell Johnston of Atlanta, Anne Bollin Johnston of Los Angeles and Elinor Veronica Czura of Bluffton; sister-in-law Joan Louise Caddell of Hilton Head Island.  The family discovered that the last check Mr. Bollin wrote was to Old Savannah Mission Home, an emergency shelter for homeless women and children. He supported many charitable causes, but this was the one closest to his heart. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Old Savannah Mission Home, 2414 Bull St., Savannah, GA 31401. A memorial service will be held Monday at noon in First Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Island Funeral Home and Crematory are in charge of arrangements.
