December 9, 1943 - February 17, 2024

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - David E. Rounds, 80, of Hilton Head Island, SC entered into eternal rest on February 17, 2024 with his loving family by his side.

David "Dave" is survived by his loving wife Brenda Cook Rounds, his beloved children Douglas Rounds and wife Melonie of Hilton Head, SC, Beverley Rice and husband Patrick of Fernandina Beach, FL, Julie Farr of Atlanta, GA, and his adoring grandchildren, Alex Rounds, Jordan Rounds, Brendan Rice, Megan Rice, Cameron Farr and Ryan Farr.

Dave was born on December 9th, 1943 in upstate New York to proud parents, Ruby Hoagland Rounds and Lester E. Rounds. Dave grew up in Suffern, New York and attended Suffern High School where he excelled in academics and athletics as a three sport athlete. He attended Syracuse University and lettered in both football and baseball and graduated with a degree in Education in 1965. Dave was drafted by the New York Mets as an outfielder where he played in their minor league program. While attending Syracuse University, Dave met the love of his life of 60 years, Brenda Cook (Rounds).

After graduating Syracuse University, Dave devoted his life to education earning his Masters in Education from Bridgeport University. Dave began his 34 year career as a teacher and administrator in 1965 and retired in 1999 after 28 years as the principal of Thiells Elementary School in Rockland County, NY. Dave spent his entire professional life as an Educator, leading and inspiring students, teachers, and staff.

Dave and Brenda raised their children in Warwick, NY and vacationed at their lake home, "Hemlock Hollow" on Skaneateles Lake where they hosted family, friends and neighbors for over 30 years. Dave's generous hospitality, kindness, sense of humor, and warm spirit welcomed many visitors throughout the years. His favorite pastimes were boat rides, swimming, fishing, playing games, and Dave was an avid golfer.

Following retirement, Dave and Brenda moved to Hilton Head Island, while still summering in Skaneateles, NY. Dave enjoyed playing golf at both the Hilton Head Country Club and Shipyard Golf Club in Hilton Head, SC, Dutch Hollow Golf Club in Auburn, NY, and Warwick Valley Country Club in Warwick, NY. Dave was still on the course scoring his age, an 80, just a few days before he passed.

I only just heard of Dave´s passing. I was a student at Thiells Elementary School (1982-1988) and Mr. Rounds was my principal, some 40 years ago. He was such a good role model and fair. I recall when "visiting" his office (yes, I was in trouble) that he played baseball at Syracuse and maybe seeing a picture of it too. After reading his obituary I´m reflecting on how I too went to Syracuse University for college and met my wife there. I´m sure he would have smiled, maybe laughed at that.

A true gentleman, I´m sorry to have heard this sad news as Dave was recently on my mind. I will always remember his monogrammed shirts and glass of chocolate milk.

Dear Brenda and family,
I am sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I have wonderful memories of Dave at Thiells, our "home away from home". During his tenure, I was a parent, PTA member, and TA. Dave encouraged me to go back for my degree in education, so I ended up teaching at Thiells for many years. But my fondest memory is seeing him sitting in the first grade hallway reading Casey at the Bat to a very happy student.
May your many wonderful memories sustain you at this difficult time.

Dave was a great addition to Dutch Hollow Country Club His personality and competitiveness earned him the nickname "Battleship" Dave. He must have been an inspirational teammate and educator. If you had the opportunity to play a golf match with Dave you always had an enjoyable time but even more enjoyable was the time spent conversing with him after play. As our members gather in our grill room we will be reminded of him as we pass the championship plaques on our walls with his name etched on them.
He will be missed.

Mr Rounds was my first principal in 1975. He managed to survive 5 of us Kelemen kids through the years. He was the epitome of goodness as a principal and guided my expectation of what a healthy school community should look like as I became an educator myself. Godspeed and your memory is certainly a blessing.

Mr. Rounds' advice made me a better teacher and person. It was my good fortune that he was the first principal for whom I worked.

I am so incredibly sad to hear that Dave passed suddenly. Literally just a few days before Dave and I were on the phone planning some golf down on Hilton Head in March. He was my golf partner for 17 years. Our friendship was beyond our golfing. Dave was like a Father to me in many ways. When we played golf he was always either talking about his family, about Syracuse University, or his golf game. I enjoyed my time with Dave very much and I cannot express how much Dave will be missed. Thoughts and Prayers to Brenda and Dave's entire family.

I am so incredibly sad to have received this news. He was honestly one of my all-time favorites. He could always make me laugh and I enjoyed it when I could make him laugh. I´m thinking of you all right now and sending each of you my love. I´m so very sorry.
