Donald Dodd Obituary

Donald Dodd Donald Dodd (87) - On Thursday, July 23,2020, Don passed away peacefully at Savannah Memorial Hospital. Don was born on April 20, 1933 in Charleston, S.C. He attended Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. After serving in the Navy, Don began a career with C&P Telephone Company and continued a successful career in telecommunications until his retirement. Don is survived by his wife, of 43 years, Harriet; his four children Tom, Kathy, Dan and David and this three step-children Michele, Steve and Larry Don has 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his loving dog Sea-C. Don and Harriet moved to Hilton Head in 1996 where they enjoyed the "island life". They could be found, nightly, out and about town dining at their favorite restaurants.... and there were many. Don was easy going and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was the "Norm" of cheers, he had his favorite seat at the bar. Don will also be remembered, by their neighbors in Long Cove, for the yearly Thanksgiving morning breakfast buffet he and Harriet would set up for players as they passed by. Don was a kind and loving person who made you feel welcome. He was a true gentleman with a kind loving heart. He was a great storyteller of his life, travels, work relationships and the love for his family. Don loved playing golf with his friends. Later in life he became a self - proclaimed wine "connoisseur", collecting wines and loved to educate you on his collection. He was a music lover, especially jazz. Some of his favorite stories include; his younger years spending time with his cousins; his days as a high school football referee; how he earned his high school basketball nick-name "Deadly Don Dodd"; playing the trombone with the Washington Redskins marching band; his love for flying his plane and his sailing excursions with his life-long friends. A celebration of a life well lived will be held in Hilton Head when social gatherings are safe. Those who so desire may make memorial contributions in memory of Don to either of the following organizations. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 200 Vesey Street, 28th Floor, New York, NY 10281 https://www.jdrf.org/ Hilton Head Humane Association, 10 Humane Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 http://www.hhhumane.org/ Don, you will be forever in our hearts! Harriet, I was sorry to learn of Don's passing. I always enjoyed chatting with the two of you at Crane's when I would sit at Tobey's bar with my best friend Pat Wrenn. I'm sure that you have many wonderful memories of Don to comfort you.

Although I never saw Don on the beach very often, I had the pleasure of spending some wonderful evenings with him and Harriet. Whether it was at their house for dinner or spending an evening at The Jazz Corner, his company was a pleasure. Don truly was an easy person to talk to, and made everyone feel welcome with his smile and pure generosity! It was a true privilege to have known Don. I cannot express the sadness that is in my heart at the loss of this man. To Harriet and his family; you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dad always worked so hard to make sure we were provided for and the lessons you taught us about hard work has gone a long way. The recent conversations we shared were great and let us see a whole other side if yoy we never saw growing up. You lived a great life and touched a lot of lives along the way. Well done dad and i hope you rest in peace. We will miss you and always try and make you proud.

I am so incredibly sad to have lost my stepfather of over 40 years! It was one of the few people I always wanted to be around. So pleasant, so interesting, and so interested in others. Truly a devastating loss for our entire family

Thanks for all of the years believing in me
Flying out to California to drive back with me when decided to go on an adventure in high school
And for all of the business ventures both successful and not, for all of the times seeing eye to eye and then not so much
I’ll miss you Dad

I was blessed to have you as my stepdad. As a young teen you made the awkwardness of being in a new family an easy transition. You provided me with love, comfort, respect and adventure. I enjoyed the times you took me up in your plane, the times we worked on the cars and maybe not the yard work.
I was later blessed when you escaped to paradise on Hilton Head Island. I never heard of it but I was in awe during my first visit...and the many subsequent visits. You told me that the doors were always open and you really wanted me to move down there. I regret that you didn’t get to see that happen.
You dined out every night and when I was visiting you brought me along. Now, I must apologize for over ordering. But seriously, who wouldn’t order the lobster bisque soup, the caesar salad and a dozen oysters as an appetizer? Is there a limit? I will miss the conversations and the toasts with your selection of fine wine. However, it’s your presence, your love and your support that will truly be missed.
My heart is heavy with your passing but I believe that you are piloting from above with a watchful eye.

“Donald P” - I love you will all my heart. RIP
