Fred Wortman Obituary

Fred L. Wortman, "Freddie", age 86, of Westfall Township, PA, passed away on April 11, 2014 following a long bout with cancer. He was born in Livingston Manor, New York on February 11, 1928 to the parents of Helen and William Wortman. He received his Bachelors of Business Administration degree from Pace University while working full time at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, affectionately referred to as "Mother Met". He retired from MetLife, serving as an executive officer, having completed 46 years of dedicated service to the company he so loved.  He married Joan in January of 1953 -  it all started on a New York City subway ride; it turned out to the ride of a lifetime, always moving forward never looking back. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, reading, watching tv, telling jokes, and drinking his favorite scotch - he was the life of any party he attended according to many; often  entering the setting with "Here's Freddie" . He bestowed the ultimate gift of unconditional love upon his family and friends and touched the lives of all others he came in contact with.  Fred, lovingly called "Da"  by his family, is survived by his wife  Joan, daughter Susan and her husband Michael, daughter Kristine, son Rick and his wife Kimberly, 5 grandchildren, Michael and his wife Melissa, Kristi Lee,  Lauren and her husband Caleb,  Ashley and Erick, and two great grand-daughters Maya and Emma and the rest of his relatives and friends.  He spoiled us all with his love and the gift of laughter.  He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen, his brothers John and Vincent and sister Muriel.  The family would like to thank the staffs of Summit Cancer Care, Visiting Angels and Amedisys / Amedisys Hospice, Hilton Head Oral and Maxillofacial for taking such great care of  Fred and his caretaker, his loving wife Joan. A private service for family and close friends was held on Monday, April 14 at Sauls Funeral Home, Bluffton SC.  A memorial service will take place in early summer in his birth place, Livingston Manor NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, an organization dedicated to eradicating this dreadful disease.
