James Goettle Obituary

James Warren Goettle, M.D. James Warren Goettle, age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep, early on the morning of April 7, 2016. A heart that had loved and cared for so many simply came to rest. The son of Richard J. and Mary Kautz of Cincinnati, Ohio, James was born on July 1, 1925. He attended the prestigious Culver Military Academy, graduating in 1943. He served with distinction as a pilot in the field artillery during World War II. Dr. Goettle was honorably discharged in 1946 and graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1949. He married his beloved Bette Jane Allen June 10, 1950, and graduated from medical school, also in Cincinnati in 1953. His internship and residency were in Ohio and Tulare, California. There, in Tulare, he was a family doctor in the truest sense. For many years, he made house calls, delivered babies, and performed surgeries that are now handled only by specialists. He was President of the Medical Society, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, on the California Blue Shield board, Kiwanis Club member, and a Foundation for Medical Care founder. James was active for many years in the National Association of Blue Cross Blue Shield as well. He was voted Tulare Man of the Year in 1966. In addition to these activities, he and his devoted wife raised four children in Tulare. Moving to Beaufort in 1991, he continued practicing medicine until his 90th birthday, July 1, 2015. To wit: the Naval Hospital for five years, created Doctors' Care thereafter, Beaufort-Jasper Comprehensive Health Services, and his most favorite affiliation at the end of his career a founding member of the Good Neighbor Free Medical Clinic. He was active in Meals on Wheels, Beaufort Chamber of Commerce Leadership program, HELP, and organized OLLI programs at their inception. Dr. Goettle was a lifelong Republican and a stewardship chair for St. Helena Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife Bette Jane, two daughters, Kim Handy of Beaufort, and Dana Cuccia of Vail, Co, and two sons, Bradley J Goettle of Westiminster, SC and Major Brooks B Goettle of the Air Force, and four grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his kindness, integrity, compassion, and tireless devotion to his family, friends, and patients. The family would like to thank the Friends of Caroline Hospice for their loving support. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 14th at 2pm at the Parish Church of St. Helena. Donations can be made to the St. Helena Preservation Trust or Holy Trinity Classical Christian School. This week Tulare lost two of its finest, Jim Goettle and Cy Johnson. Both excellent physicians and wonderfully interesting people. I was the Administrator of Tulare District Hospital for several years (1971 and 1972) and Cy became my doctor. I worked with Jim as he tried to put together a pre-paid medical plan for the Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Unfortunately, we were too far ahead of our time but he was certainly a true visionary and humanitarian. I count myself as being very fortunate that I had two such fine gentleman to help mentor me in the early stages of my career. On a side note, Kim, Jim's daughter, was one of our first baby-sitters when we moved to Tulare. Peace be to the memory of Jim and blessings to his family.

Mrs. Goettle, Brooks, Dana, Brad & Kim..........my deepest condolences at the loss of your husband & father. He was always known as a man of integrity, honor, decency and compassion. He was my Dr. for most of my childhood and he was always gracious and funny. I remember him cheering all of you on as you competed on the Tulare Sharks swim team. He changed Tulare by being an excellent physician, inspiring other young students to become physicians locally (my brother for example) and his humanitarian and community work but most of all by being a role model all of us could look up to. He will never be forgotten, his legacy and impact is eternal. Love & prayers to all of you.

I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Goettle for the ten years I worked TDH ER beginning in 1976. A great Dr., and even at 18 yo He treated me not as the "kid" I was, but showed me great respect. The care he provided his patient his is something lacking in today's busy ER. Thank you sir..

Dr Goettle was our family physician in Tulare for many years. My mother, Jane Stone, worked in the medical office as a RN. He brought my brother Jeff into the world and cared for all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.

Jim Goettle was one of the finest citizen leaders that I have ever known. He made major contributions to the medical community, to our church, to the party working for better government, and to our world. There are few equals to what Dr. Jim gave to our society. He will be missed.

I had the privilege to work as a nurse with Dr. Goettle at Good Neighbor Medical Center for years. He had such a wonderful 'gentleman's' presence with the staff and his patients. He always made time to sit with who he worked with and find out their history. Early on we found out that his son Brooke was in Bethesda teaching the CRNA studies while my son was a student CRNA! We were able to pray for our sons together in their careers. His kindness and consideration was so 'old school' and refreshing, something that is so lacking these days. He is missed at the clinic. We talk of him often! And I know he is with our LORD and hearing HIS words, "Well done!" My sympathies to his dear wife and family as I know he will be so missed.
